While earning my MBA, I will be establishing my company PinkSlayer LLC, a patient navigation service for cancer patients. My goal is to set up a patient navigation site in Virginia that service the low income community. I am currently meeting with directors at local medical facilities to see if they are willing to donate unused space in their facilities. My long term goal is to turn PinkSlayer into a non-profit and expand beyond Virginia to include rural areas that has minimal healthcare support. Completion of the MBA (concentration in Healthcare) will give me the educational background to fully run PinkSlayer …show more content…
as a Navigation center. I will also learn the medical facility trade to make it sufficient and safe for the community. One of the biggest discrepancies in at-risk communities is the education level are lower than the rest of America. I want to offer GED courses, and various medical certification programs (i.e. Sterile Process, Food Service, Housekeeping, Unit Secretary, certified nurse assistant, etc.) to help the low income community gain employment to become self sufficient. Once I get the patient navigation center properly staffed and operational, I then plan to pursue my doctoral degree in Health Sciences. I want to be more involved with cancer research and help put an end to a horrible disease that has claimed the lives of many.
My professional goals are to use skills learned through life experience and education to help at risk communities become self-sufficient.
To give a little background on myself I was raised in a single parent household. My Mom worked hard to make ends meet and was very strict about our education. We grew up in a neighborhood full of poverty, drugs, and alcohol abuse. Somehow my mom was able to keep us distracted from our surroundings. The funny thing is we didn’t realize how bad our old neighborhood was until she made enough money to move. The lesson she instilled in us was to never let your surroundings determine your outcome in life. Always dream big, set goals, and work hard to achieve your dreams and goals. You are never too old to make a positive difference in the world. After winning the battle with cancer I decided to take action on her advice and start a Patient Navigation company in Virginia. A patient navigator is a member of the healthcare team who helps patients “navigate” the healthcare system and get timely care. Navigators help coordinate patient care, connect patients with resources, and help patients understand the healthcare system. Patient navigators work in many areas of healthcare. Many have one chronic disease focus area such as cancer, heart disease, or diabetes. When you look at the statics for cancer diagnosis’s African American has a higher mortality rate, however Caucasian Americans have a higher diagnosis rate. Although my company is very small; I want to earn my M.B.A with the concentration in healthcare to gain the knowledge to expand my company. I want to build partnerships with large medical facilities in Virginia to provide services to low income patients who may not consider going to the doctor because of finances. I had the privilege of being trained by Dr. Harold Freeman the founder of the Patient Navigation program in New York earlier this year (March 2017). Dr. Freeman guidance and training helped me open doors for
others that also wanted to give back to the community. I currently have three volunteer navigators who are helping me introduced patient navigation here in Hampton Roads, VA. Their hard work and dedication has help a few clients navigate the healthcare system to get help needed to be seen by appropriate medical professionals.
