Unit description
This unit aims to develop critical understanding and reflection on the impact of computing and information systems on society, the importance of ethics and codes of practice in computing, legislation affecting computer use, and the impact of human resource management policies and employment law on the use of computers and development of information systems. There are various laws, acts, guidelines, etc. that direct approaches to working with, designing and implementing computer and information systems. Learners need to understand as many of these as possible and evaluate their impact on computing, in order to be more effective developers, deliverers and users of systems. They also need to be aware of different working practices and how employees can be affected. Experience has shown that often large information systems projects fail to deliver the expected benefits, so students need to be aware of a range of strategic change management approaches to overcome barriers to change and ensure successful project implementation. This unit will help learners to develop a mature attitude to working as an ethically aware professional in today’s everchanging social and technological world.
