Descriptive
and profile essays provide vivid details regarding a person, place, thing or activity.
The
goal is to provide a detailed description for the reader and to allow the reader to visualize what is being described.
Some
profiles in particular take the reader behind the scenes of familiar places, giving a glimpse of their inner workings.
In
some cases, they introduce an audience to exotic people with peculiar hobbies, unusual professions, or bizarre personalities.
Others
probe the social, political, and moral significance of institutions.
When
possible, write about a person, place, object or activity which is memorable and leaves a lasting impression.
Gather
Details
Begin
gathering details by observing the person, place, thing or activity which will be written about.
Notice
any particular details which make the subject distinctive. Bring attention to the uniqueness of the subject in order to avoid a vague explanation.
If
you are unable to observe the subject, research what others have to say about it.
Often,
they will have additional information to add to the description by discussing their perspectives, such as how they feel about the subject. Profiles interpret their subjects, revealing the writer’s attitude and point of view. The description should create interest in the subject and help the reader “picture” the person, place, thing or activity which is being described.
Person
When observing a person, list important physical characteristics, mannerisms, and personality traits, especially those which help make the subject unique. Write about these singular traits in such as way as to help the reader visualize the person.
