PROJ 220 week 2
1. (TCO 3) Prepare a five to seven paragraph response proposing leadership styles you would recommend for the Denver Airport Project. Please choose a combination (two or three) of the eight leadership styles presented in the Thompson textbook (Chapter 11: Leadership: Managing the Paradox). Please note that you are to also use three other sources from the internet or the DeVry online library. All sources must be cited. (Points : 30)
Based on the reading it is hard to give a single leadership style or even a combination of leadership styles because there are so many different levels of productions and management for this project. Each level of management will have their own required type of leadership and while some styles may overlap, there will be differences for each level. For a project this large you are more than likely to run in to just about every type of leadership style at some point.

When we start at the top you see that there is a Collaborative Leadership between the City, Greiner Engineering, and Morrison-Knudsen Engineering. Collaborative leaderships work well but even with a collaborative leadership there needs to be an organizer that directs the flow of discussions and determines outcomes in the event of a stalemate. This is not discussed in the passage and it is not determined who has the final say. Typically this would be the city since they are the owners but in many cases it also depends on the how contracts are written. While in the long run the city can make the final decision depending on the way the contract is written the city may have to pay to make those decisions. Without more information on the contract with the city and the engineering firms we cannot confirm if it is a true collaborative leadership. But there are other aspects that are brought up that bring up more concerns with the management systems used. While it appears to would be a collaborative leadership it does not seem as if everyone is on board with the same ideas.

The Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991 (TCPA) was established to protect consumers from the increasingly intrusive methods employed by telemarketers. Information technology advances such as auto-dialers, predictive dialers, and automated faxes made it easier to reach large numbers of businesses and households in a relatively short time. These methods were not only highly annoying to consumers, but through the use of these devices, telemarketing companies were also passing some of the cost of marketing onto the consumer. Consumers on the receiving end of numerous calls from various companies throughout the day were spending time that could have been spent in other activities and were rightly frustrated about the loss of their time. In the case of automated faxes, resources such as paper, ink, and even the data connection being used to receive what is essentially junk mail was a cost the consumer had no way to avoid. Fortunately, lawmakers responded to this unethical action of telemarketing companies with the TCPA. Specifically, the law makes it illegal to use auto-dialers and pre-recorded voice messages to make sales calls to emergency phone lines, medical offices, hospital rooms, homes for the elderly, paging services, or cellular phones. It also requires the recipient of pre-recorded telemarketing calls to give prior consent to receive the calls. It also made it illegal to send unsolicited fax messages. The law also gave states their own authority to regulate telemarketing practices. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) enforces the rules set forth in the TCPA. The FCC was also given authority to issue regulations beyond the TCPA in order to continue to protect consumers from abusive telemarketing practices. This provision shows that Congress recognizes that over time changes in information technology may make the TCPA insufficient to meet the task of consumer protection ("EPIC - Telemarketing and the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA)").…

Different types of leadership styles exist in work environments. There are advantages and disadvantages within each leadership style. The culture and goals of an organization determine which leadership style fits the firm best. Some companies offer several leadership styles within the organization. Organizations need strong leadership and strong management for optimal effectiveness. According to Robbins, we need leaders today to challenge the status quo, create visions of the future, and inspire organizational members to want to achieve the visions (Robbins, pp. 368). According to the Houston Chronicle, there are essentially five different types of leadership styles,…

In my life it seems that one person always gave me great advice my grandfather lived a long time and was wise. Grandpa was the go to person for when I have a life issue. My grandfather is a very wise man. He has learned lessons from life he served in Korea and Vietnam. He would always tells us grandkids and great grandkids that everything happens for a reason; a reason to learn from. My grandfather’s name is Robert and he lived a very interesting life he served in the Army for a long time I think it was something like 30 years. Grandpa always had a reason behind everything he did. He always helped me by talking through my problems with a logical and reasoning view. Grandpa has always helped me to look at both sides of a problem and the possibilities of outcomes and apply things that I already know to the situation before making a decision. Grandpa always has listened to what I have to say and he isn’t against taking advice from me. He always says that he values my input and he will store it in his knowledge bank for future reference. Grandpa is very humorous along with being logical, he always seems to be able to make light of most situations and can help me look at things from a humorous side and if I end up making a bad decision. (Normally, because I didn’t go to grandpa about it before hand.) The best advice I have ever gotten from my grandfather is, when you are making a decision think about 6 months from now, or even 6 years, what is the outcome from both sides; and can you learn from your choice either way? Throughout his years grandpa has always held a positive mind frame and laced life with humor, he always asks what I learned even if I faced a consequence. I believe that my grandfather is one of the wisest men I will ever know. Grandpa always learns and uses past knowledge before making a decision. Grandpa always had been there it help me with his wisdom and knowledge of life’s great lessons. I joined the army 10 years…

The leadership theory I prefer over the others and will most likely imitate once in a management position would be the Leadership Grid. This grid was created by Blake and Mouton and is an assessment tool used by managers to determine their predominant leadership style. The grid is an x/y-axis grid that represents the degree to which managers have a concern for the production and for the people. The specific degree to which a manager has concern for either/or determines the manager’s actual leadership style. Lussier explains that there are eighty-one possible combinations of concern for production and people (page 81). That may seem a little excessive to some. However, the model only recognizes five of the eighty-one styles. The five styles recognized are:…

A collective decision is most effective when all partners exercise leadership. Partners need to work collegially instead of dominating those they perceives as less powerful. Partners ideally bring a variety of strengths and potential contributions to the table. Collective decision need each partner’s power and strength, with new operating principle that sees the whole collaborative as greater than the sum of its parts.
