ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We would like to thank our project mentor Mr. Vinod Chauhan, ECEL who has been a guiding light for the project. Also, Mr. Amit Yadav, HR-ECEL for giving me this opportunity to carry out the project. A sincere vote of thanks to the staff of ECEL, without whose cooperation, I would not have competed the project.

Project Synopsis

The objectives of this project were to understand the functioning of backhoe loaders and its components and then analyzing the assembly line for bottleneck operations and suggesting ways to eliminate them. The current strength of workers is 89 spread over eight broadly categorized assembly stages. The production on an average working day is 3-4 BHLs which needs to be improved. Most of the work done is manual, using power driven tools. Therefore, improving worker efficiency and synchronization of work were key elements to be looked into for improving production.

“Welding is a process critical to our present state of civilization and technical advancement, yet little understood and most often taken for granted” (Haynes and Storer 1). We are constantly hearing through television and other media sources that the job market for people trained in some sort of vocational skill is in very high demand. Media advertisements are encouraging students to consider a vocational skill when looking at their future. Welding is one vocational skill that has been and will continue to be in high demand. It is estimated that today, 50% of the gross national product relates to welding and is a part of just about everything you see, including the making of airplanes, ships and different manufactured products, from lawn mowers to big machinery. Welders hold approximately 452,000 jobs nationally with most jobs related to the manufacturing industy (Welding Career Guidance). Welding also plays a big role in providing energy. Welders are involved in the maintenance and building of offshore oil rigs, pipelines, power plants and even wind turbines (Salary Information). According to James Hunt, “Most companies and factories are looking to hire people who have some training with regards to welding.” To better understand the welding profession, we need to understand the definition of welding, the history of welding, the most common types of welding, welding safety, welding certification requirements and salary levels.…

Over the previous 50 years, welding has become more productive, automated, and safer. Generally, the welding norm was resistance based and performed with big machinery. The aerospace industry spurred the innovation of new ways to weld thin metal. At this point in history, all welding systems had good and bad aspects; the choice should be made with a balance between the different capabilities of the systems, including its power requirements and limitations.…

    A Definition of Welding

    • 282 Words
    • 2 Pages

Welding dates back to the earliest days of metalworking, and continues to be widely applied today due to its costeffectiveness, reliability, and safety. When compared with other joining methods, such as riveting and bolting, welded structures tend to be stronger, lighter-weight, and cheaper to produce. More than 100 processes and process variants comprise the family of welding technologies, and include methods for welding metals, polymers, and ceramics, as well as emerging composite and engineered materials. These various technologies allow a great deal of flexibility in the design of components to be welded. They also encourage designing for optimal cost-effectiveness in productivity and product performance. Welding and joining technologies pervade commercial and defense manufacturing, and are a significant source of value-added in the manufacturing process. Occurring late in the manufacturing stream, the joining process is typically the final step in assembly and plays the major role in ensuring structural performance. Additionally, the emergence of near-net-shape processes to produce sub-components has raised the importance of assembly processes as the next area for increased production efficiency. The role of welding and joining in the repair and life extension of manufactured products is even more critical since these processes are frequently used to repair structures and components that were not originally…
