1. What is concrete operational thought? Give an example.

“Concrete operational thought is a child’s ability to think in general logical principles about concrete thing and meaning tangible that they can be seen, touch and taste.” This means that the child understand that although the appearance of something changes, the thing itself does not change.
Example: If you take two pieces of strings that are the same in length, and scrunch one up then you ask the child which is longer. A child will reply that the strings have the same length; you just change the position of the other string.

Piaget’s theory of the concrete operational stage occurs in children between the ages of 7-11. This operation depends on concrete examples hence the name “Concrete Operational Stage”. “During this final stage of formal operations, the older child or adult can think logically about potential events and abstract ideas” (Eysenck & Flanagan, 2001, pp.363). Though at this stage children can think more logically they are still limited in some ways. Piaget found that children at this stage can only preform mental operations on real concrete objects and find it very hard to move from concrete objects to abstract. They are unable to move beyond specifics. Although they are limited in these ways they are still better at relating mental representations.…

She did this by passing two tests of conservation, the first was to test if she could recognize that the volume of water stayed the same if it’s appearance was altered. She passed, also explaining that even though one appears to be holding more, it is only because it is “skinnier”. She also was able to recognize that if she had two sticks of equal length in front of her, and one moved slightly to the left, it was still the same length as the other stick even if it moved. This is evidence that she is in the concrete operational stage because a child in the preoperational stage would not have been able to pass the tests because they do not understand conservation of objects and their appearance. “Concrete operations allow children to coordinate several characteristics rather than focus on a single property of an object” (Santrock, 2014, p.…

Jean Piaget called early childhood the preoperational stage of cognitive development because children this age are not yet ready to engage in logical mental operations, as they will be in the concrete operational stage in middle childhood. The preoperational stage, which lasts from approximately ages 2 to 7, is characterized by the use of symbols to represent objects and relationships among them (Rathus, p.148). Advances in symbolic thought are accompanied by a growing understanding of causality, identities, categorization, and number. Some of these understandings have roots in infancy and toddlerhood; others begin to develop in early childhood but are not fully achieved until middle childhood (Papalia, p.269).…

The third stage is the Concrete Operational Stage, which occurs around age seven to age eleven. This stage marks the beginning of logical or operational thoughts for the child. Their thinking becomes less egocentric, and the child can now understand that although the appearance of something changes, the “thing” itself does not. For example, if a child decided to spread out a pile of blocks, they know there are still as many blocks as there were before, even though it looks different.…
