Prophet Muhammad
He is believed to be the last prophet sent to mankind by God. Some believe Him to be the genesis of the Islamic faith. But we best know Him as the messenger and prophet of God. Prophet Muhammad whose full name is Abu al-Qasim Muhammad ibn `Abd Allah ibn `Abd al-Mittalib ibn Hashim was born in the town of Mecca in the year 570. His name is derived from the Arabic word ‘Hamada’ which simply means ‘to glorify’ or ‘to praise.’ Being the first and only child to Abd Allah bin Al-Muttalib and Amina bint Wahb, he was raised by his mother who in adherence to the Meccan tradition entrusted him to a wet nurse called Halima at his childhood days. He grew up in the hilly country learning pure Arabic language.
Unfortunately, at the age of six, he was orphaned and his grandfather, Abdul Muttalib, took great care of him afterwards. He was under his grandfather’s care for two years where he was loved very much and preferred over his grandfather’s sons. Abdul Muttalib foretold that Muhammad would hold a prestigious position in the days ahead of him. Mecca’s traditional idolatry and new materialism disturbed Muhammad to a point that he occasionally fasted and meditated. Eventually, he was visited by overpowering being that instructed and recited words of force and beauty to him and he attributed them to God.
His Leadership
After having several experiences, Muhammad revealed these words to the society, which were eventually put together, verse by verse to later become Islam’s sacred scripture, the Qur’an. A decade later, Muhammad and his followers were belittled, ridiculed and persecuted for going against Mecca’s tribal ways. Threats of his assassination made him leave Mecca, travelling to Yathrib, an oasis town where his father was buried. He was taken as the mediator of the civil war going on between the leaders of Yathrib. This was due to his wisdom.
Later on, Yathrib became known as the city of Prophet Muhammad, Medina, where he built the first Muslim community that gathered more followers. As a leader during times of war and moments of peace, he proved to master skillful methods which he used to deliver the message of Islam. Prophet Muhammad valued and communicated liberty, modesty, justice and politeness to the people and he also succeeded in applying them too. His skills, which are evident in his speeches showed humankind that he was a great and worthy leader.
Irrespective of religion and political affiliations, he used Islam as a medium of preaching kindness. His communicative talents have shown that he influenced thoughts of people by advocating kindness their dealings with each other. He indicated to his wife that she should love the poor which implemented that people should share love and kindness, no matter their economic background. The world today lacks modesty and Prophet Muhammad said that every religion should have some kind of meaningful character, laying emphasis on the fact that Islam is a modest religion.
To conclude, Prophet Muhammad has had a great impact in my life. Through his teachings, I have been able to accept and embrace other religious faiths in my environment. I have been able to question my conscience by believing in Islam which has helped me embrace modesty and exemplary behavior significant to my life. In addition, according to Prophet Muhammad’s leadership and teachings I have been able to adopt values of gentility, generosity, liberty and moderation in the society.
