The New Theatre Studio Space Proposal for Drama Club Production

BMCC Theatre Works: Drama Club (Spring 2015) would like to request the use of S144 (The New Theatre Studio) to produce a minor production The Extract: 4 Act Play by Alex Broun. It will be directed by Kari-Noor Thompson and Jovaun Black

We are requesting to use the New Theatre Studio for the production of The Extract: 4 Act Play. Due to the absence of Theatre Club last semester, we are starting over as a brand new club. This means we receive less money, and really need to work to rebuild Theatre/Drama Club from the ground up. Our goal is to progress, to rebuild our connections with the Theatre Department and staff, and to ultimately produce great work. The use of S144 would greatly help us to accomplish these goals.

Our proposed dates and time are as follows:

Wednesday, May 6th 5pm-8pm (Tech Rehearsal)
Saturday, May 9th 6pm-8pm (Tech Rehearsal)
Wednesday May 13th 2pm - 5pm (Run-Through)
Friday May 15th 7pm-8:30pm (Show)

If any of these dates or times do not work, things can be moved around and time can be minimized. We could also cut the performances down to two, if necessary.

Proposals:

We propose that one of our advisers (Professor Sicre or Professor Papoutsis) be present during the show, if they cannot, we would like to request that another professor be available, for any shows or rehearsals in the studio. We recognize we cannot be unattended.

We realize that most of the following proposal is merely preliminary, subject to expand as we acquire more team members and information. We also realize that any new information should, and will, be shared with staff as soon as possible. The approximate running time of the show is 45 minutes (No Intermission) but may be cut shorter as deemed necessary. The cast will consist of 6 actors. (some are double cast) Our set and props are minimal. An example of some things we may need are a table, chair, bar, door, bed, desk, kitchen

Will Bury, an enterprising inventor, is convinced that soon everyone will be reading or listening to everything digitally, including books that have been mostly available in hard copy. He knows that there are books on CD, but these are relatively expensive and have been recorded using human readers. He also knows that there is technology that can transform the printed word into audio, but the sound is somewhat inhuman. Will plans on speeding up the transformation with a proprietary technology he has developed and patented. This technology takes the printed word for text materials and creates a file with the option of reading it digitally or listening to it with a realistic synthetic voice. Will knows that he has free access to books no longer under copyright protection, and he figures he can pay a royalty fee of $5 per title for copyrighted books that will greatly expand his catalog. So far, he has limited himself to English-language books but is working on a language translation option as well.…

On July 11, 2016, I presented a booktalk to a group of ten female teens that are a part of the teen theatre group, the Saax Bradbury Players. The booktalk was hosted by an employee of the theatre, Jen Blalock. Because of rehearsals taking place in the theatre, the booktalk was given in the host’s home. The grades of the students range from rising sophomores to 2016 graduates. The ethnicity of the student group is ninety percent White and ten percent African American. The main interest of this student group is drama. Most of their time is spent in rehearsing and performing in children’s, young adult, and adult theatrical productions. These teens are truly diverse in the groups in which they relate. Their ages…

    Abolition of Slavery

Slavery in the United States first started in 1619, when African slaves were transported to Jamestown, a settlement in the colony in Virginia. These slaves were brought to the United States primarily to help with the making of crops, especially tobacco. The practice of slavery remained present throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in other colonies of the United States, which helped build and strengthen the American economy as a whole. In 1793, the cotton gin was invented, which triggered the immense importance of the practice of slavery towards the success of the economy in the southern parts of the United States. On the other hand, the northern parts of the United States experienced a rapid growth and dispersal of abolitionist laws and activities, which displayed a great amount of hatred towards the practice of slavery in the United States. The United States Congress made African slave trade or international slave trade illegal in 1808, but it did not hold back the practice of domestic slavery that was becoming even larger in the United States. The act of trading between the colonies in the United States flourished, and by 1860, the amount of slaves in the United States unfortunately tripled, and reached to four million. The expansion of pro-slavery beliefs in the western parts of the United States in addition to the increase in abolitionists in the northern parts of the United States soon caused a tremendous debate over slavery, which practically tore the United States apart.…

That is it. That was Drama 10. The four unit “fundamentals of movement, speech, theatre games, and improvisation” course, has come to an end. I must say that this class truly flew by at the speed of light. One day we are learning about improvisation and the next day we are performing our final scripted scenes. Although this may be true, I have been, through my time in this class, thrown into a pool full of theatre knowledge; including the terms, phrases, and an opportunity to witness a full theatre production. This plethora of new information and skills have been developed from reading the Drama 10 reader, the process of writing a script, the rehearsal time spent getting ready for the final, and seeing an actual theatre performance.…
