Expert Evaluator:

“I have read A MODEL SECONDARY (6-12) PLAN FOR READING INTERVENTION AND DEVELOPMENT and believe that it will be of significant value to secondary schools in Minnesota and elsewhere. It seems to me that its major value will be in alerting schools to the complexity of the situation, alerting them to the many possibilities for addressing it, and providing them with some of the resources necessary to do so. This is certainly something that schools need and will be fortunate to get.” - Michael F. Graves, Ph.D.

Educating and guiding students to read and become fluent readers is a life changing experience for the students. Increasing literacy skills in students prepares them for academic and professional careers. Educators must reflect on their own teaching practices and implementation of intervention strategies to meet the needs of all children while taking into account of their individual reading readiness: emergent, beginner, and transitional. As educators are implementing strategies and teaching practices, they are creating a literate environment that is conducive to all readers.…

During my book buddy experience, I have learned the different types of strategies that can be used in order to support student’s reading needs. I have realized the importance of students being able to understand the relationship between written letters and spoken sounds in order to use phonics to read and spell. My knowledge of informal reading inventories, primary spelling inventories, and running records has significantly increased as I feel very comfortable and confident when administering these types of assessments. I have learned many creative and fun effective activities that can help increase students phonics skills. I have learned the effectiveness of using graphic organizers,…

In the case of two of the programs (Success for All and the Winston-Salem Project), regular classroom reading instruction has been redesigned to ensure that appropriate instructional routines and materials are used. However, even when early intervention instruction is added to an effective existing reading program, there is also the anticipation that the sound practices that are part of the early intervention program will become infused into regular classroom instruction if they are not already part of it. For example, Reading Recovery teachers almost always spend part of their day as regular classroom teachers, reading consultants, language arts coordinators, etc.; through these roles they attempt to introduce instructional…

I’ve chosen to research the effectiveness of close reading for struggling readers on the secondary level and crafted the research question: How can the use of close reading strategies affect the reading performance for high school students? As a current high school teacher, I’ve witnessed the struggles students face across multiple content areas because of reading deficits. What makes this matter even more unfortunate is that high school graduates are thrust into college classrooms without the skills needed to confront rigorous text. I’ve taken on taken on this topic because I’d like to support the struggling readers in my school’s community. Most importantly, I’d like to initiate more research driven projects that address solutions and…
