Affirmative Action can be described as a government program that is designed to rectify the injustice that occurred in history by making an effort to provide minorities with access to educational and employment opportunities. It was established and has been around since the 1960’s and made a big appearance in a case that went to the supreme court in the 1970’s. The nature of affirmative action polices vary from region to region and from country to country. In most cases heard by the Court regarding affirmative action, there is a strict scrutiny test to determine whether or not provisions will be an end result. It has specifically improved many opportunities for African Americans in employment and education. To commence, it is a way to ensure that diversity is procured in communities including work and school communities. There is a high importance for diversity as a country, because of the fact that it comes in countless forms, whether its gender, age, culture, sexual orientation, beliefs, background, etc, diversity brings about knowledge and perspective different from ones own, which also encourages growth. Affirmative action helps people who are considered to have a disadvantage, being their background of many limiting factors, a little bit of an advantage that they most likely wouldn’t have had otherwise. It’s a system to help compensate for many years of oppression and in a way it helps to “level out the playing field”. It promotes equality for all races, and gives an opportunity to to break down barriers put up by society in the form of stereotypes regarding color. Those who are considered minorities often have a conventional image made about them which sets the tone for others to have a presumption of their behavior and capabilities.
