Say you bought a perfume that you absolutely fell in love with, but then you find out in order for it to be “certified” it had to be tested multiple times on animals. Would you still buy this perfume? The debate over animal research can be confusing unless one understands the very different goals of animal welfare organizations and animal rights groups. These mainstream goals encompass traditional concerns for the human treatment of animals. Should scientists be allowed to do research that causes pain and injury to animals like dogs and chimpanzees if it produces new information about human health problems?

If a new product comes out, would you want it to be tested on you or your pet dog? That is the situation asked us with questions such as this. The belief is that we have coddled these animals out of their natural state. (Debate) It took several years for the research community to realize that animal rights activist were not going away. Scientists, research institutes, and federal research agencies finally came to realize that charges being leveled by animal rights activists needed to be publically and formally refuted.
Recently, many more federal officials and respected researchers have publicly spoken on the importance of animal research. (The Independent) It is clear that many people concerned about the use of animals in research are not aware of the elaborate structure that exists to regulate the care and use of animals in research.
