Introduction:
All research regarding artificial intelligence should continue, because advanced AI can provide sufficient assistance for people struggling with difficult tasks. Artificial intelligence is a branch of computer science dealing with the simulation of intelligent behavior in computers. We will prove that the continuation and furtherance of AI research are necessary.
Body:
Stalling the progress of AI research would be detrimental to the rate of scientific breakthroughs, and it would have a negative impact on the advancement of technology. In addition, stalling is impractical due to not only AI’s plethora of potential and assistive applications in the field of technology, but also its
widespread positive reception. An example of the perpetuation of AI’s positive reception is the RoboCup, an annual international soccer event, founded in 1997, in which robots compete in soccer tournaments, and it remains active today. AI can be a highly assistive application for the elderly and the physically disabled; according to Sebastian Thrun, a robotics developer and cofounder of the educational organization Udacity, approximately 1.2 million people die and over 50 million are wounded, annually, due to traffic accidents worldwide. To decrease these statistical values, AI vehicles could assist elders and physically disabled people in their travels. According to David Poole and Alan Mackworth, professors in the Department of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia, AI appliances in hospitals could help surgeons perform surgeries much more precisely and carefully. Furthermore, AI technology can be utilized as learning and teaching tools in schools, and it can be programmed to recognize speech and assist with language education. Also, AI technology could help people utilize energy more efficiently, by analyzing sustainable systems, or systems that are in balance with their respective environments. In regards to ethics, issues may arise once sentient, or conscious, technology begins to exist, but AI robots can be programmed to abide by laws and regulations, and engineers would have to abide by certain laws, regarding AI robots, in order to prevent possible disasters and cataclysms involving AI technology. Isaac Asimov, a sci-fi novelist and professor of biochemistry at Boston University, proposed the “Laws of Robotics,” a hypothetical set of laws for artificially-intelligent robots. According to these laws, robots must protect themselves, follow their owners’ orders, and not harm humans. In addition, manufacturers must program these laws into their robots. Despite the possibility that sentient robots could revolt against their owners, engineers can program robots to refrain from disobedience.
Conclusion:
Stalling the progress of AI research should not be done, because that would halt scientific advancement, deprive disadvantaged people of assistance with arduous tasks, and prevent human civilization from elementally expanding. Thank you.
