Allowing asylums into our country is one of the most controversial topics spoken about through Australia. Rick Morton, a Social Affairs Writer for the Australian, wrote an article named, ’10 Things You Need To Understand About Asylum Seekers’, I will not be going through all of these points however I will be talking about most. Although he is quite a comedic journalist, he does prove a valid point about why every negative thought towards asylums can be reversed onto our own society. In order to understand this subject we need to have the knowledge of what an asylum seeker is. According to the Oxford Dictionary, an asylum seeker is someone who has left their home country as a political refugee and is seeking asylum in another. An example where this point can be made valid in our society is through the following; if a man is having a heart attack, and you walk past, it is not your fault that this man has the decency to have a heart attack in a public area, it is not my problem, thus I shall not help him or get medical help. Just by saying this, it is clear to see how wrong it is to say this. It’s not your parents fault that you failed a test, but they help you with it, they help you see the problems you have created and how to fix them.
In conclusion, Rick Morton’s article, ‘10 Things You Need To Understand About Asylum Seekers’ shows that granting asylum to those desperate is not going to change the way that you, or others are going to you your lives. It will only enhance our culture, bring more faiths and religions into our country, boost the economy and bring better lives to others. But we will still be able to be us.
