Secondly, college universities get a lot of money from college athletes and
Well except for the fact that players don’t get paid for their labor. If you look at it players should see at least little part of whatever money they generate, for example Texas A&M start quarterback Jonny Manzel is said to be responsible for close to 2.5 million dollars in revenue generated for the school alone. Because of TV, merchandise, tickets sales and him just playing there Texas A&M gets that much extra money. He doesn’t get anything from it, in fact most college athletes are struggling money wise while on campus. Coaches on the other hand, since players can’t get paid the coaches make 6 and sometimes 7 figures. John Kalipary, the head coach at Kentucky University has a 4 million dollar salary. This just isn’t fair to the student athlete and I think they should have some sort of compensation for all that they…
“The average compensation for the 108 football coaches in Division I is $1.75 million. That is up 75 percent since 2007” (Connolly). This number has most certainly increased in the past few seasons. The salaries of the highest paid coaches in the nation, however, are even more outrageous. Nick Saban, head coach of the University of Alabama, will earn a guaranteed $55.2 million during his eight year contract (Connolly). Also, Ohio State University’s Urban Meyer signed a six year, $24 million contract (Nocera). These two contracts highlight the insane amount of money that the top college football coaches earn. This is all while the players that they coach earn zero dollars. However, it is not just head football coaches that make ample amounts of money. Division I assistant coaches earn a respectable amount as well. “Salaries for assistant coaches have commonly exceeded $200,000, with top assistants in the SEC averaging $700,000” (Branch). It is ludicrous that all of this money is spent on coaches, who would not have a job without the players. The main cause for the high coaching salaries is that the players cannot earn any of this money. Colleges and their athletic departments are non-profit, so the money they make must be spent. Because of the inability to pay the players, schools spend a vast amount of their profit from football on the coaches and other athletic staff (Connolly). This cash could be better…
People like Joe Narcea say that college athletes should be paid. Nocera states that “without that athletic ability, many of them wouldn’t have been admitted,”(Nocera 22). College athletes are multi-billion dollar businesses. The players are bringing in millions of dollars to the universities and they aren’t getting enough recognition. While other students can go get jobs and earn money, college…
This is a multi-billion dollar situation that they are talking about. College players are now like the professional players but they don’t get paid. Both college and professional players are an entertainment industry. The college coaches are the ones getting all of the money that is made from the college players which the college players make the money from the media rights, television, marketing, tickets and luxury boxes. Average college coach’s salary is 1.4 million. College players bring in more money than you could imagine.…
Could you imagine if college athletes would get paid? College athletes that play sports everyday and don’t have time to get a job and do their academics. Most college athletes that play football or basketball and if they win a championship they bring millions of money back to the college. If you go to college and play sports like basketball, football you should get paid for how long you stay in college for the sports before you go pro or drop out. Because most athletes think when they get paid they can just go blow all their money but they don’t think they have to pay the school back. Therefore, college athletes should get paid. Because if the athletes get good grades and perform good they should get…
Some colleges make more money than others. This graph shows the schools with the most profit in their sports programs. Somebody could say that the athletes bring in an enormous amount of money. According to Jeff Dorfman, a professor of Economics at the University of Georgia, only a few collegiate sports actually bring in money. Therefore, an athlete in a sport that isn’t very profitable wouldn’t make nearly get as much as an athlete in a very profitable sport. Along with the sports being very profitable they also have to pay for an even larger variety of different things. Student athletes should not be paid because of the money that would be paid to them. The money that they would be paid could be used to advance other things in the university such as better libraries, science labs, fixing up the dorms, or even improving their athletic facilities. Although the athletes put a lot of time into their schooling and sports the benefits they are given is equal to what they are giving and being…
The NCAA is in charge of several sports from basketball and football to wrestling and golf. The NCAA is in charge of three various divisions, which are based on the size and success of the school. With this issue, many sports analysts have started to make their very own statements on it. Michael Wilbon is a sports analyst for ESPN, when debating about whether college athletes should be paid or not, Wilbon wrote in an article, “The best college athletes in the two revenue-producing sports have always been worth much more than tuition, room, board and books. … Yet, no player can benefit from that work. The players have become employees of the universities and conferences as much as students -- employees with no compensation, which not only violates common decency but perhaps even the law” (Wilbon). People need to understand the great amount of unfairness that college athletes have been enduring. The NCAA is making millions of dollars off of these college athletes, and these college athletes are simply not receiving one penny of it. The NCAA is not treating their college athletes right in the slightest bit, but could arguably be violating the law, as well. Therefore, college athletes should be paid because of their diligent efforts for the…
The NCAA is considered a non-profit organization by many of the people that are in charge of this business. As a non-profit organization the NCAA averages an annual profit of 6 billion dollars. The volunteers of this company are made slaves by the system. The athletes no longer scoring the game winning touchdowns are soon forgotten about. Many of these athletes going in their thirties and forties are barely able to walk, and cannot go through the day without a headache. Student athletes deserve to be compensated for risking their bodies for the NCAA, and the millions of fans watching for entertainment.…
In college football the coaches get paid more than the professors that are teaching the future of the America and the world. On the Sports CheatSheet Website in the article 10 Reasons Sports Are America’s #1 Priority, written by Frank Carson, says “football coaches earn an average of approximately $31,000 more per year than teachers” (Frank Carson). I think this is sad because the professors are trying really hard to teach the students and it seems the coaches are…
The Ohio head coach, Urban Meyer who earns $6.5 million a year, agrees that college coaches are overpaid. “After all, in a violent sport, players risk suffering a career-ending injury. In a normal labor market, employees who take on risks are compensated for it. But the list of NCAA football players who suffer debilitating injuries keeps growing. It's obvious to many that college players should be paid for the risks they take and the value they create,” (Wisconsin State Journal).…
Athletes in college may not make money from the games they play, but they don’t really need it either. They rarely have to pay tuition, they don’t pay for room and board, and they probably don’t pay for their food either. They have no need to make money off of their games because everything they need is already paid for. People say they deserve at least part of what they make, but the school uses it to better their school and facilities, so overall it’s being used for the players anyway.…
Athletes with very little time on their hands are not making money off their beloved job. Over decades, there have been athletes pouring their heart and soul into their sport that they have worked for. For years, the love of the game has gotten almost each and every elite athlete to a university where they can showcase their ability and talent. However, for the Division 1 level it is more or less a business, and your job is to bring in as much profit to your university as you can. Regardless of the business, a true athlete will play the game with a desire to win in their hearts. In recent years there has been controversial question as to which every athlete is thinking. Should student athletes who play a sport get an extra benefit by being paid because they are a college athlete?…
Any coach of a successful college football team makes somewhere between 900,000 dollars and 5 million dollars annually. These are the coach’s of the big 10, big 12, SEC, ACC and many other conferences. For our top two college football teams in Michigan alone we have some of the highest paid coach’s. Brad Hoke the coach of our Michigan wolverines made 3.25 million in 2011 and was the eighth top paid coach in college football. Mark Dantonio, coach of the Michigan state Spartans, made 1.9 million according to USA Today. This is a small portion of what the whole industry of college football will make for a single college every year. It is wrong to not pay the ones who are even making all of this entertainment possible.…
A good place to start is to make the sport scholarship a full scholarship.” (pg.3) Athletes are also prevented from making money off of their own names, which were used for jersey sales.” Supporters of paying NCAA athletes argue that large profits have permeated college sports to such an extent that it would be unthinkable to try to stop large companies from profiting from college basketball and football.” The athletes face consequences by the NCAA for doing such things as taking money off of autographs or even selling them to fans. Suspension comes into place there and eventually hurts the athlete’s. “Supporters of paying college athletes assert that players should be paid simply because their hard work makes money for other people. Boyce Watkins, a finance professor at Syracuse University in upstate New York, argues, "If what you do earns money, then you have the right to negotiate…for your share. When Tom Cruise makes a film, he gets paid quite well. He doesn't get the money because he's a nice guy, he gets paid because he is generating revenue for someone else. That's how capitalism works." Gambling is something that has caused athletes to be suspended off of the team and even kicked out of college. Gambling in Colleges is illegal and is a very serious situation that comes with consequences. “Some commentators have argued that, even if college athletes are not directly paid, they should receive a share of the…
In my opinion, I am able to see both sides of this issue extremely well because I am a student athlete myself. Although I am not a student-athlete in the NCAA, I am a member of the University of Windsor women’s soccer team and have to balance being enrolled as a full-time student and a full-time athlete. In Canada you never see full-ride scholarships leading to a free education and I think NCAA athletes are unaware how fortunate they are to not have to worry about future debt. A quote by John Smith states, “I think we have a responsibility as student athletes. For those who are on scholarship, it’s about you appreciating the fact that you are being rewarded”. During our time competing in youth sports we are oblivious to what the future has in store for us and we are playing to have fun, learn new skills, and be with friends.…
