The first district explored by the authors is the South Bronx. This is one of the poorest and most Democratic congressional districts in the United States. Some of the problems of this district are as follows: high percentages of children, high rates of infectious diseases and violate crimes (Dreier, Mollenkopf, & Swanstrom 4). The area has such a high poverty rate because the government pushed thousands of homeless families there. Despite these problems, the South Bronx has a few good aspects to it as well. Immigrants bring rejuvenation to the area, housing units are being built or redeveloped, and there are large numbers of thriving community groups (Dreier, Mollenkopf, & Swanstrom 5). This area shows the greatest sense of community. Church…
Henry Levine’s candidate’s speech consisted of primarily cognitive context only when outlining your prior achievements, which he says you could have used to help the city. This benefits Henry Levine’s speech by illustrating to voters that you are smart and had the knowledge to help give the Oakland people the changes they wanted during your time in office, but you did not accomplish. Although the candidate’s speech is primarily emotive when Henry Levine is trying to illustrate how you have failed at changing the city. Some examples of this are “Why then do we, the upstanding residents of Oakland, find our streets littered with young and disgruntled vagrants calling for anarchy” And “We need to look no further than the house of cards built…
Originally, California was an idolized state as the agriculture, diversity in regions, and diversity in people made it an attractive and financially beneficial place to be. Now California has one of the highest living costs, poor employment rates, low education scores, and a lack of quality public facilities. One of the causes, according to the article "The Fourth Branch of Government," is Governor Hiram Johnson's implementation of a more direct state democracy with referendum, initiative, and recall. The article explains how initiatives are more powerful and dangerous than referendums, which I partly agree with. Then it discusses how direct and indirect initiative differs as well as their consequences, which are true, and how the problems…
After sixteen years of scandal-less tenure, and the many more to come, the alderman has left a vast amount of accomplishments and reforms in her wake over the 39th ward. As a professional, Alderman Laurino has dedicated her time and efforts to the…

The problem has been recognized and more than just planners and lawmakers are noticing the ways that our cities aren’t functioning. One way that our city here in Grand Rapids has struggled with for years is the…
At the local level, I am represented by Bill Hickman for Ward 4 of Norman’s City Council. Hickman was elected this April. He stands out for advocating and volunteering to improve the quality of our local animal shelters- namely he is against the kill system we currently have. He is a “proponent for stricter environmental protections,” and has volunteered with Blue Thumb to help preserve our city’s waterways. He is for the Norman Forward projects, which seek to improve our libraries, parks, and create new public services (like a public pool) for the benefit of community. Hickman has implemented himself in the community long before running for office, and he wants to help the community and local businesses grow and thrive.…
o One benefit of the FCAT is the fact that, in order to have some success in college, trade school, or later life, students must possess some standardized knowledge of subjects like math, reading, comprehension, and the like. The FCAT is linked directly to the Sunshine State Standards for what knowledge is required for these students, and as such it is a fairly accurate measurement of what students have learned and a fairly accurate predictor of weak areas and how they may be expected to fare in college.…
I would like to start this report off by saying that I have never been to city council meeting before, even though my father was the mayor, and still serves on city council back in my home town of Kingsford, Michigan. I found this experience both interesting and exhausting to see and understand the scope of the council’s role and responsibilities in keeping this city running. All members of council must have to have a very extensive education and background in finance and public administration even in mid-sized city like Colorado Springs. I couldn’t imagine the business required in a major metropolitan city.…
Curtilage is the immediate area surrounding persons home (Hall, 2014). This area is considered part of the home and is afforded the protections of the Fourth Amendment (Hall, 2014). Open fields is a doctrine that states certain areas around ones home are not considered curtilage, and therefore these areas are not afforded the same protections under the Fourth Amendment (Hall, 2014). The U.S. Supreme Court has stated the areas considered to be open fields are areas law enforcement can encroach on without having to obtain a warrant (Hall, 2014). The U.S. Supreme Court heard the case, United States v. Dunn, and developed four factors that help decide what area are treated as curtilage and what areas are considered open fields (Hall, 2014).…
The mayoral election we see in The Last Hurrah is not dissimilar to the presidential election we have just recently witnessed. Despite being written in 1956, this novel relates very well to this class, myself as a millennial and new voter, and shows political precedence for our current political situation. The change in political style and perspectives shown in The Last Hurrah, in my opinion, ties in very closely to one of the biggest reasons Donald Trump is our current President-elect. Eight years ago Barack Obama ran on a platform of change and for the last eight years and decades prior, the American public has watched politician after politician make empty promises in exchange for political support as they vie for the presidency. Much like Frank Skeffington who had been a politician for decades, Hillary Clinton has long been involved in politics. She is a former first lady to President Bill Clinton, and a member of the Obama administration. Despite the change she would have brought by being the first female president, to many she represented an extension of the current administration and a continuation of greedy politicians running for President. Having been exempt from the political sphere prior to this election, Donald Trump embodied a new perspective on politics, similar to Kevin McCluskey, and in my opinion this secured his position from the…
California truly is caught up in a disastrous situation and the long term effects have been in the works for quite some time. Diversity is at the heart of how the state functions, runs, and votes. Home to phenomenal coastal views, vast desert plains, and tall illustrious mountains, the state is truthfully very unique. “Nowhere is this paradox truer than in California, a dysfunctional natural paradise in which a group of coastal and governing magnificoes virtue-signal from the world’s most exclusive and beautiful enclaves” (Hanson 4). Vast amounts of beautiful scenery are present no matter what part of the Golden State you reside in or visit. However, this leads to an overpopulated state in general with countless problems to continually battle.…
California’s geographical splendor has contributed to the state’s popularity since 1850. Yet the golden state finds itself combating the same issues for many years. California, with the largest population in the U.S., has an economy that produces $1.8 trillion in Gross Domestic Products ever year. Despite being the desired location for business’s, Californias rate of unemployment and tax rates are the highest in the nation. Over the years the rich have become richer and the poor have become poorer. “Since 1995 , incomes for the poorest 10% of California families have dropped 20%. In contrast, incomes for the wealthiest 10% of California families have increased 605% over the past thirty years” (Scarpelli, 2015).…
In January 2002 after more than 23 years in Nebraska and a year stint teaching/traveling in China, I finally finished my undergraduate studies at the University of Nebraska and promptly fled the Great Plains for the Elusive Eden. After the light shock of difficult parking, high traffic, and idiotic housing prices I fell in love with my strange new home in the Bay Area. My first big California surprise was not the preponderance of far out community activists and ridiculous law proposals: Reading up on Berkeley prepared me for that. Nor was I very alarmed by the fatal shooting a few blocks from my apartment on Alcatraz Ave that first month. Instead my surprise came months later on a summer late night road trip to Los Angeles with my visiting brothers.…
