“What qualifies as hate speech?”. In my opinion things such as racial slurs, degrading and sexist comments, and things that incite violence are examples of hate speech. According to a survey by the No Hate Speech Movement, 83% of the people who took the survey had experienced some kind of hate speech. The survey also showed that the three most targeted groups were people of the LGBTQ community, Muslims, and women. Many other groups of people experience hate speech to, people with disabilities and people of color often experience hate speech.
Does today’s society foster and accept hate speech? With our new president, Donald Trump, having just been elected people have seen a rise in the allowance for hate speech. Is this just a new trend or do people today actually think that it is okay to use hate speech? An example of hate speech today is when our president mocked a disabled reporter on live television. There are really no specifics in the constitution about hate speech and whether or not free speech is protected in the first amendment.
In mine, and many others opinions, hate speech can very easily turn into violence. There are fine lines between someone giving their opinion and hate speech and someone using hate speech and dangerous speech. Widespread hate speech from a big source can even lead to a genocide, like for example the genocide in Rwanda.
