Throughout history, many methods were utilized to sanction and rehabilitate juvenile delinquents. In this research paper, I aim to explore the various techniques which were tried and are currently used and suggested as a means of dealing with offending youths. Mainly, I want to inspect the advantages and disadvantages of each system so that I can understand the correlations of the methods and their abilities in producing a future law-abiding citizen. Further, I will research the need of considering the cognitive and emotional abilities of youths before finalizing a treatment plan to determine which method will have long-term or short-term results. First, I will explore the implications of counseling techniques. Many methods of counseling and therapies were utilized over the last three decades to try to rehabilitate youth offenders, even for those who committed serious offenses, without incarceration. One such method, the Multisystemic Therapy (MST), focuses on counseling delinquents within their community with an emphasis on the individual’s flaws and characteristics (May 298). Further, a more controlling rehabilitative method is the use of probation officers. Probation is a method used to allow juveniles to remain in their communities; however, they are under the strict supervision of officers who are meant to mentor them, divert them from reoffending and scrutinize their actions to ensure proper conduct. Additionally, these officers are meant to teach the youths proper life-skills so that they can lead a healthy and legitimate lifestyle (Schwalbe 357).
