For instance, more education on alcohol, and law enforcement may reduce the number of underage drinking. Regarding this topic Saylor stated, “Instead of removing one of the most researched and supported policies in the alcohol control arsenal, we should seek to add to and improve this effort with increased enforcement, additional legislation, and efficacious interventions (330). With the increase in these categories, youth will be more educated on the dangers of underage drinking and binge drinking. There would also be a stronger support line for those that struggle with alcoholism or addiction. New legislation could also provide more programs to monitor underage drinking at high schools and college campuses. Also, an increased emphasis on enforcing the minimum legal drinking age will deter more young people underage drinking and may even eliminate the social norm of underage drinking. The current legal drinking age does need to be improved because currently it is being violated by many young adults. The law should be improved through additions of legislation, law enforcement, and support programs. This would ensure that the drinking age of 21 reaches its full potential of effectiveness of protecting today’s youth. The debate over this law is important to all people of the United States because this law is in place to protect the youth. All should do what is in their power to speak out and help establish these drinking laws. This may be through protests, or just small petitions of signatures.
