Pros And Cons Of Rifling
Why are gun barrels rifled?

Background to rifling

Rifling consists of lands and grooves in the inside of a barrel, the lands are the part of the barrel which is not cut away while the grooves are the part of the barrel which is cut away. Lancaster oval bore, eight groove rifling and polygonal rifling are only a few example of rifling forms. Lancaster oval bore rifles have a smooth barrel interior. Unlike Lancaster oval bore rifles, grooved rifles have grooves which are engraved into the interior of the barrel. The polygonal rifle involves replacing the rectangle grooves with hills. The barrel consists as a polygonal shape of either a hexagon or octagon. [1]

Why are gun barrels actually rifled? Bullets should travel in a parabolic path; however, there are a number of factors which affect the path of a bullet. These include the forces acting on the bullet, twist rate and gyroscopic rate.

The main forces acting on the bullet are gravity, air resistance and wind. Wind causes the bullet to move away from its course of path. If there is wind blowing from the left side of the bullet then this will cause the bullet to move to the right and vice versa. Gravity will cause the bullet to accelerate downwards at a rate of 9.81 m/s, whilst air resistance will cause the bullet to decelerate downwards with a force proportional to the square of its velocity thus, decreasing the velocity and kinetic energy. Hence, these three forces need to be considered when predicting the path of the

In the case of scenario two, the shooting incident was taken place in a crowd of people when an individual was delivering speech on a slightly raised podium at a range of 25m. A low popping sound was heard by most people in the crowd but the shooter or the gun was not seen by anyone. As a result of the shooting, the victim had a small entry wound in the lower abdomen without any exit wound. In my opinion, the most suitable weapon I have chosen is Glock 19 4th Generation 9mm Pistol with an ammunition of Federal Classic Hi-Shock jacketed hollow point 9mm 115 grain ammunition, also used with a sound suppressor.…

Then I would explain that his target is below the surface of the lake and that by firing a steady stream of rounds at it, we might be able to hit it. (Well, this probably will not happen as anything that is covered by 4feet or more of water is fairly safe from being struck by conventional bullets.) While he is happily firing away at the target, I would direct his attention to the circular ripples on the surface of the target area being created by the impact of the .50 caliber slugs striking the water’s surface in a steady stream, the spacing between them, and then mention how the spacing relates to the frequency to the impacts. I would also say that since the bullets were being fired at a steady rate, that we could say that they were fired in an analog fashion.…

This investigation aims to explore the different paths of shots used in Beer Pong which is a drinking game that involves a ping pong ball and usually 20 cups. This topic is of significance to many teenagers and early adults as it addresses the techniques used in a game played at almost every party. I am very interested in projectile motion as it is part of the topics we cover in HL physics and this also links to a very fun game. It is also one of the topics included in engineering courses which is what I plan to study at university level therefore this gave me the opportunity to improve my knowledge in a future area topic. In HL…

Have you ever seen a show or movie that shows someone being shot, dramatically fly backwards and crashing into their surroundings? Well, that is just not possible, it breaks the laws of physics. For example in the third season of CSI Miami Tim Speedle is shot one time, but this is supposed to be enough to throw him off his feet and into the air. If you take into consideration the laws of physics and momentum it is just not possible. A bullet being shot from a gun does not have the momentum to propel a victim violently…

Rifling is a system of lands and grooves in a barrel which cause a projectile to rotate as it exits the muzzle, in doing so it improved trajectory and accuracy. Grooves are cut into the smoothbore piece lands are the original diameter and spaces left after the rifling process. Due to the greater amount of stress inflicted by the tight seal necessary for the projectile to rotate as well as greater pressure in the breech, rifled weapons had to be stronger. During the beginning of the Civil war, many artillery guns were smoothbore.…

When the football travels through the air for a long pass it always follows a curved path because the force of gravity influences the movement of the ball in the vertical direction. As the ball travels up, gravity slows it down until it stops briefly at its peak height; the ball then comes down, and gravity accelerates it until it hits the ground. Projectile motion is the path of any object that is launched or thrown and has an arched course (howstuffworks)…

The importance of cleaning your gun can easily be compared to that of the importance of maintaining your car. Much like any vehicle will require regularly maintenance in order to stay in good condition, so will your weapon. Some say the golden rule of lubricating is you can keep your weapon wet and dirty but not dry and dirty. That said, weapons can be forgiving about carbon build up as long as they are well lubricated. So, why lubricate the weapon? The soldier must clean and lubricate his weapon, firstly, to prevent wear and secondly, to promote a certain level of performance. Lubricating the weapon ensures that your weapon is reliable in the field of combat. The bottom line is a weapon a firearm is a machine. It is a mechanical device with moving parts that performs a function. The primary purpose of lubricant in a machine is to reduce friction between moving parts and thereby improve function and reduce wear. Many weapon…
