In today’s society young women are required to be mindful regarding the attire worn, to avoid negatively enticing the minds of young men. While girls may appear to dress provocatively, young men should exercise self-control in all environments, rather in school or their home setting. Looking throughout our community, you can see the double standards that exist, and what young women have to endure in school. One such article that shows the struggles of young women is in Laura Bates “How School Dress Codes Shame Girls and Perpetuate Rape Cultures.” In this article she covers many topics including society’s views on what is considered acceptable apparel for young women and sexism. The article states that society gives boys permission to sexually harass women because of articles of clothing or the lack thereof. The world we live in today perpetuates a culture where girls cannot simply wear clothing of their choice, due to the fact boys may find them irresistible. This makes it extremely difficult for young women to be treated without bias, dress…
In today's society, the least that school’s should be worried about are shoulders showing. This specific rule of attire is unnecessary to incorporate into our schools handbook for school is a place of learning, not judging and yelling at students for their shoulders showing. This topic could also be linked to sexualising girls and what they wear. In today’s society, girls are expected to show zero-no skin in order for it to be “appropriate”, but there’s a lot wrong with that statement. Girls, especially adolescent ones, shouldn’t be taught that wearing a tank top and showing off your shoulder is wrong and unacceptable. The specific quote, “The reason why these stupid dress codes are created is because the school systems believe that when a girl(and only girls) wear tank tops, their shoulders distract other classmates from their class work. This is a result of the unnecessary sexualization of showing a little skin, even though the temperatures may be boiling…
I am rarely ever the one to post, especially about my issues, but I am speaking for many. While the discussion and arguments about school dress code are going on so isn’t downgrading, stereotyping, and bullying. Many comments have been made by people who are stereotyping others for instance cheerleaders. We are being stereotyped as preppy, snobby, slutty, “the populars”, and the list goes on. We are being used in examples like “The people who wear intentional holey jeans and revealing clothing are “the populars” and cheerleaders.” And “The cheerleaders wear skirts hiked up their butts and push their boobs up to the sky, but I got in trouble for wearing the clothes I did, this is favoritism.” This being all untrue is stereotyping, downgrading…
The first reason the dress code is is bad is because the rules are ridiculous. The school system makes horrible rules for students, like girls not being able to show their shoulders. There is nothing wrong with a shoulder as long as the shirt does not go down too far to show anything, also not being able to show their bra strap. Everyone knows that most girls in high school wear bras. People make a big deal about girls wearing “spaghetti straps” because it is too revealing to the girl's shoulders. In the spring…
I understand that school is a place for education and you should dress modest and you shouldn’t show up with your private parts coming out of your clothes, but women should have just as much amount of rights to wear what they please as men do. Equal rights should be practiced in every single school district, and boys should be disciplined just as harsh as girls are(for example when their pants hang so low you can see their underwear)(or when their muscle shirts cut so wide on the side that you can see their niple). Continuing to treat women like they should always cover up and be ashamed of their body can affect them in a negative way, mentally and even…
According to school boards majority of girls are all indecent, this creates girls to be allowed to only wear a few items of clothing without breaking the sacred dress code law. There are very specific rules about what us girls can and cannot wear. “Skirts, dresses and shorts cannot be more than 2 inches above the knee”, which means we are allowed to wear only long shorts. Sounds like an oxymoron if you ask me, because wouldn’t long shorts be pants? “All pants and shorts must be worn on the waist.” So this obviously means those who choose to wear their pants about their waist would be punished. “All tops should cover the top of shoulders and cover the entire body.” I don’t know what our school would do without the “shoulder showing” dress code rule, because honestly shoulder showing could really get crazy. I mean, us kids get so turned on by shoulders. “I am overwhelmed with lust every time a bare shoulder is in my presence. It’s a good thing we aren’t allowed to show our bare shoulders”, says a fellow Chiawana High School student. Who knows what would happen if we all walked around with bare shoulders all day. Also, since when does a shirt cover your entire body? I have never seen a head to toe shirt, unless you include ghost Halloween costumes made from cheap sheets. If this is the case then I’ve been violating the dress code for over 3 years, wearing shirts that only cover my torso, without even knowing it. How silly of me!…
Have you ever been sent home from school because of what you were wearing? Maybe you should have been sent home, but you did not get caught? I am writing this paper because high school students across the country. and some parts of the world. get sent home and miss out on education simply because you could see their shoulders. (Buzzfeed) At Haven we have it pretty easy. In other areas it may be more difficult to find a cute outfit to wear. Some may even struggle to find something cute to put with or on their uniform that will not get them in any kind of trouble. School dress codes around the country. and some parts of the world, should be less severe. should not prevent individuality, and should not be difficult to follow.…
I strongly disagree with the fact of the shorts dress code rule being 6 inches or mid-thigh because if your shorts are 6 inches and not mid-thigh you can be dress coded; also if you shorts are mid-thigh and not 6 inches you can again be dress coded. I believe it is unfair because it gets to the point of you not knowing if the shorts are in dress code that you have to wear jeans all year even when its 100 degrees out side. It is also very inconsistent with people getting dress coded and people getting warnings and not being sent in to be dress coded. I personally agree that students should not be wearing booty shorts to school because it is very inappropriate and not expectable, but I do not agree with the fact that some people get dress coded due to the fact that their teacher or a staff member is in a bad mood on day and the next time they wear the same shorts they don’t! In a way the issue can not be fixed but it can be discussed and more consistent. The fact that it can be one 6 inches or the other mid-thigh is logically not fair due to the fact that you do not know what one it has to be. Also you can only be dress coded a certain amount of times until there is extreme consequences. So you do not want to risk the fact of wearing shorts that you don’t know will be in dress code or will not be, and you just wear jeans even though it is extremely hot out side and you risk having a heat stroke. Therefore those are some reasons why the dress code rule for shorts which is 6 inches or mid-thigh is unfair and should be discussed. Even if the rule can not be entirely fixed whether you get dress coded or not, the fact of having the term “6 inches or mid-thigh” should be fixed so girls will know what they can go out and look for to wear to school because its not fair to go out and buy new shorts for school, then you figure out that they are out of dress code because they are not either 6…
Yet again, these boundaries on what to wear are technically violating the first amendment because it is limiting freedom of speech very predominately. The matter is a very slippery slope, what to allow and what not to allow. Additionally, the rules are easily interpreted as sexist, shaming girls for wearing what needs to be worn. _____. A lot of the time, school workers blame a female student’s clothing as the reason why boys are being distracted from their learning. They are taking a student out of learning so that a male student can focus better. “Your self-control is not my problem,” some would say.…
Boys will be boys, and girls need to conform to keep things under control. Under a strict dress code, school officials make female students conform to the perverted minds of teenage boys. School dress codes claim to teach students how to dress properly for their future career and create a safe environment in school, but in reality it often sexualizes young women’s body parts and underestimates young men’s maturity. Establishing strict dress code rules perpetuates rape culture and prevents young people from having freedom of expression.…
In a world of white male supremacy, girls can’t even feel free to wear the clothes they truly want to wear. Dress codes at Sherwood School District and school districts all over America have unfair restrictions against girls, and are teaching them negative lessons about themselves and their bodies from a very young age.…
Imagine a situation in which a girl is sent home for wearing yoga pants, but her boy classmate stays in class while wearing a skin tight “muscle shirt.” This situation happens too often in schools all over. The discrimination in this situation may seem obvious, but some might deem this as an appropriate and fair incident, where the female was rightfully punished for her inappropriate clothing. Situations like the before example, are often backed up by school dress codes, a code in which certain articles of clothing are regulated. Dress codes are in all schools, including private and public, middle and high schools; however, regardless of the kind of school, dress codes almost always target girls(9).…
Ever since school was created it had always been important to dress nicely and appropriately for and better learning environment. Most schools require uniforms to help this issue. But schools that don’t have uniforms usually have dress codes instead. Schools usually bans tank tops or shorts because they are seen as inappropriate. But there are dress codes in many school that can be seen as sexist and shames mostly girls for it.…
Leo Junior Senior High School is located in Leo, Indiana, just outside of Fort Wayne. Like most schools, Leo Junior Senior High School has a dress code. Skirts and dresses most be four inches above the knee; however, girls are not allowed to show their shoulders. One student today felt that was outrageous when she got dress coded. She was pulled out of a lesson for not having her shoulders covered, and I feel that this is ridiculous because shoulders are not tempting. As a women myself, I think that we should not be taken out of a lesson to be told that shoulders are distracting people from the…
Uniforms in schools won’t make things better, it does not improve school safety or academic discipline. It violate a student’s right to express themselves and freedom. It’s also a problem for families that don’t have good finances, because the uniforms are expensive than regular clothes. It’s also harder for a school to enforce the rule of students having to wear only the school uniforms.…
