Pro: This will help prevent unnecessary prison violence while providing inmates with more effective ways to rehabilitate.
Con: Just like proposal (ii), finding an alternative to segregation can be costly, as well as it requires more manpower and time.
The alternative policy change that I would propose is to have more social workers in the facility in order to ensure that each social worker handles few cases. This will not only make the segregation process more efficient, but also reduce the burn out rate, and hence this will go a long way in ensuring efficient treatment of the inmates. Unfortunately, this policy change can be costly, particularly in terms of money and time spent hiring and training the social workers (DiNitto, 2011).
