The Senate, now led by the Republican Party, held the power of passing the treaty (Lenger.) Senator Henry Cabot Lodge would lead the debate against the League of Nations starting on February 28 1919. Senator Lodge was accepting of the idea of the League of Nations however, he did not agree with the stipulations the conference imposed on the League. He believed that joining the League would cause us to end up in more wars, that the United States would not have the ability to leave the League and that our country would be flooded with immigrants (Lenger.) Senator Lodge also had a personal vendetta against President Wilson. While Senator Lodge added amendments to the treaty, these did not please President Wilson. President Wilson asked Democrats to vote against the amended version unless the amendments were dropped.
