There are safety measures at most if not all railroad crossings and if there isn’t it is common sense to stop at the crossing, look both ways then safely proceed across the tracks. If the lights are flashing and the crossing arms are lowered, then stop and wait for the train to pass. You should never ever go around the crossing arms to beat the train. It’s just not worth it.

It is much easier to replace a damaged car and it is not worth the risk to your life. Trains appear to be moving slow because they are so big, they are like an optical illusion.
Trains can run in either direction, so you must really look to the left, to the right and to the left again before safely crossing. You should always use extra caution at night especially if there are two tracks. Can you just imagine waiting patiently for the first train to pass, thinking about running late, how slow the train is coming, wanting to go on a date with your girlfriend and not noticing the second set of tracks or the second train?
It is very important as a driver to always yield the right of way to the train, also, never ignore active warning at crossings, even if you can’t see the train coming.
