Your family may need more assistance from your family members as they get old. Unfortunately it’s not always easy for your family members to be around around the clock. Many turn to a nursing home that employs qualified staff to offer round-the-clock medical assistance. Your family members put their trust in these nursing homes to take gentle care of your loved ones, but many times what happens behind closed doors is far from the predicted.…
Nursing homes, however, are designed for persons in need of 24-hour nursing care (Allen, 2011) Even though they provide almost the same residential components of other long-term care options, which includes housing, personal care, protection, supervision, and sometimes therapy, the availability of on-site medical staff is the edge they have over the others. Nursing homes have custodial care, which a person with Alzheimer’s disease will need. The custodial care which includes assistance with all of the activities of daily living like eating, dressing, bathing, walking and medication management. With the above explanation, Don will likely choose a nursing home for the care of his wife, Mary.…
If we also look at another issue as to why long-term care could be a large burden is the rapid inflation in expenditures for long-term care in recent years. Medicare and Medicaid expenditures on nursing home care were $9 billion in 1980, more than doubling to $25 billion by 1990, and doubling again to $54 billion by 1999. Likewise, Medicare and Medicaid expenditures on home health care increased from less than $1 billion in 1980 to $5 billion in 1990 and to $16.1 billion in 1999, down from a high of $17 billion in 1996 (Health Care Financing Administration 2000; Heffler et al. 2001). With this we can also see that out of pocket…
Recently, a small group consisting of three Breckenridge nursing students researched the education levels of a registered nurse. The title registered nurse is held in high regards respectively. Each nurse and perspective nurse is an individual and has a different home life from one another. Some of them may have to work a full time job to keep a roof over their head. Others may work part time or enough to keep their license active. All of those factors determine the individual’s level of education and commitment to work.…

With the downturn of the economy, in recent years, it is an opportune time for companies to acquire businesses that are suffering. Unfortunately, healthcare facilities that assist long-term care patients fall victim to this misfortune in time. According to "Longtermcare.gov" (n.d.), "Most long-term care is not medical care, but rather assistance with the basic personal tasks of everyday life, sometimes called Activities of Daily Living” (What is Long-Term Care?). Chronically ill or disabled patients qualify…

Being a nursing home administrator with in a nursing home, excellent communication is a necessity. Communication is how care providers determine the quality of care that is given and needed for the patients. By being a nursing home administrator, it is my job to make sure that the HIPPA rules and regulations are being used by all employees. By making sure that HIPPA rules and regulations are being upheld, the nursing home is providing quality care to the patients.…

Considering this, other potential options were to explore volunteer opportunities in hospitals or clinics. Thus, I recalled my friend Fernando Moreno M.D., who has worked at Jamaica Hospital in Queens, NY for several years and proceeded to phone him and inquire. Being a friend, as well as a sweet, dear person, he offered to sponsor me and avoid the hassle of the application and interview process after informing him of my time constraint concerns. Here, this was another valuable lesson concerning future job employment with regards to networking. Sometimes, having a friend, relative, or simply knowing someone who works in a prospective company can be an…
I have worked in several nursing homes as a CNA, and a CMT. I have had my CNA certification for almost 15 years, and my CMT certification for just about 5. The experience that I have is mostly in home health care. I enjoy this, because it is more one on one time with a patient. I personally believe that if you have a client, it is best to give them this attention.…
I grew up with my grand parents who needed a lot of help from me. I used to help them in many ways at home and out side. After I came to USA, I always wanted to work with elderly people. Two years ago, I took a CNA class and started working in a nursing home. I was very happy for being able to help older people because it gives me satisfaction and I feel like I am doing for my grand parents. Now I see my self working in a extended care facility as a nurse and it is very exciting for me.…
Often people look at nursing homes as a place where older adults go to live out their final days, I honestly believe this is the way society perceives nursing homes because of how older adults were cared for in the past. According to the book Community Care for an aging society. “Since the colonial period, the primary provider for the care of the elderly adults has been family.” (pg.42) (Cox) An older adult having to go to a nursing home does not necessarily mean that they are going there to live out their final days. Times have changed over the years and sometimes it is no longer an option for family to take on caring for an elderly parent or family member. From my own experience of working in a nursing home I have witnessed many older adults who are very capable of doing most ADL’s on their own given the opportunity to do so. We also know that this is not the case for some older adults residing in a nursing facility, some are incapacitated and some may be in the care of hospice.…
