Taylor Mali’s “The The Impotence of Proofreading” is a poem that catches the eye of the reader immediately from the title. Mali writes about the importance of proofreading in a very humorous way. He says even though you may have a spell-checker, proofreading is not to be forgotten. A spell-checker can fail to catch missing words, fail to catch wrong words that are spelled correctly, fail to catch words that are written more than once in succession, and a spell-checker might even replace a misspelled word incorrectly. In the passage Death to high school English, written by Kim Brooks, explains the thoughts of a college professor who teaches composition, and is dealing with students who do not know how to write at all. Brooks story is told in first person, simply because she experienced it firsthand. The tone of this passage seemed to be mostly frightening because Brooks was in shock at how terrible the writing was and had to put a stop to it and make a change. Another tone that was noticeably present in the text was disbelieving. Disbelieving was definitely present because Brooks was in complete disbelief, disbelief in how students at this age and experience still do not know how to properly write. “I’ve begun to wonder if this typical high school English class, dividing its curriculum between standardized tests preparation and the reading of canonical texts, might occupy a central place in the creation of a generation of college students who, simply put, cannot write” (Brooks). Brooks writes with an annoyed tone, and a very powerful vocabulary which helps her back up her point very specifically. Proofreading is a method of editing a document. Proofreading aloud is technique that engages the reader fully into the process. I generally proofread either to myself or in a low voice and have always been able to make corrections in this fashion. However, I do find that when I read out loud, it helps me to discover mistakes I might otherwise overlook. Mistakes like grammar, punctuation, sentence flow or word usage. I now feel, after being a student of this class, being successful in business or school requires the ability to organize, arrange, and compose thoughts into a logical format. Without these skills it is impossible to communicate thoughts and emotions grammatically. Reflecting on the past three months, I notice that our English 1A class has learned skills necessary to develop personal, informative, and persuasive essays. These are essential points needed to become successful in today's society. In previous English courses that I have participated in, I never realized that essay-writing skills were so important. Because of this class, my attitude toward writing has matured into an understanding of what it takes to be a good writer. I showed me my weakness in writing lied in my grammar. I had never knew how much work I needed on my grammatical skills until taking Comp I.
