In the “Masque Of Red Death” by Edgar Allen Poe, Poe uses imagery and symbolism to create an allegory that communicates to the reader the idea that nobody is able to escape death. In the story, Prince Prospero and his royal friends seclude themselves away from a plague called red death that is killing every poor soul it comes in contact with. As the royals entertain themselves with a masquerade, red death himself arrives at the party, finishing up of what's left of human civilization. Now the first thing that is found that creates imagery and symbolism is a line in the story that says,”While the chimes of the clock yet ran, it was observed that the giddiest grew pale”.(Poe pg.5) This shows a symbol of a black grandfather…
“The Masque of the Red Death” displays the gothic element of a character's motivation caused by fear. Prince Prospero insured his and his guests safety with “The courtiers, having entered, brought furnaces and massy hammers and welded the bolts” (Poe 430). In order to protect himself and the guests from the contagion he had the doors of the abbey sealed shut. The fear of getting the contagion caused Prince Prospero to seal himself in the abbey. Prince Prospero’s fear is not only shown towards the contagion but towards the masked figure. After he saw the masked figure, Prince Prospero shouted, “Who dares insult us with the blasphemous mockery? Seize him and unmask him - that we may know whom we have to hang at sunrise” (Poe 433). Prince…
Every environment has a food chain group within the ecosystem. The Chesapeake Bay’s food chain begins with the growth of bay grasses and algae, the most critical part of the food chain. Not only does the bay grasses and algae have a part but everything living within the bay play a role in the food chain, whether it be the zooplankton, oysters, or small and big fish. If there were to be a decrease in any part of the food chain, it will have a major effect on all other members in the food chain including humans. The cause of a decline in the food chain could be from many sources such excess nutrients that cause algae populations to grow rapidly, or "bloom" and reduction in sunlight (Nutrient Pollution). The way to fix these problems include,…
Both influential writers in the time of early American literature, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allen Poe explored the dark motives of the human psyche. In “The Minister’s Black Veil”, a short story by Hawthorne, the town’s minister, Mr. Hooper steps out into the street one day wearing a black veil that covers his face. His clergymen cannot bear to see him plainly profess his sins and instead separate themselves in an attempt to deny the truth that all people are flawed, but are eventually forced to accept it. In Poe’s short story, “The Masque of the Red Death”, Prince Prospero and his merrymakers lock themselves within a castellated abbey in an attempt to escape the horrible “Red Death” that ravages the lives of the…

After explaining who Crito was, I then went on and discuss Phaedo which is the death scene. Jacques Louis David based his painting on the death scene. It was the day for Socrates to drink the hemlock. He said that he would like to take a bath before he crosses the great divine. Crito ask Socrates if he would like to be buried and Socrates said that they can do whatever with his body. Socrates went on great lengths to say after he passed away, his soul will leave his body and it will live on eternally and that the body that is left behind will no longer be him. Socrates also told him that he should not be upset to see his body being buried or cremated. Socrates goes into the next room to speak to his family and give them his last farewell and…
In “The Masque Of the Red Death” the main character is shown around the castle of Prince Prospero and as he goes through all these rooms that are very lavish and well done there is a theme of sorts where each room symbolizes something. Prince Prospero begins with showing the rooms froms east to west, The first room, blue, is the beginning of the rooms and also symbolizes the beginning of life and or can be seen to symbolize birth. Next, the purple room is shown which symbolizes royalty, wealth and power. After that the prince shows the green room which symbolizes the part of life where one begins to grow and change, like in the spring when plants turn green and begin to grow so do people. Orange is the next room, which symbolizes autumn which…
Who is to blame, when death occurs? Obviously, this is difficult question, and the matter can be very tragic. Sometimes, when tragic events materialize, it involves multiple people, and in this instance, sometimes those who help the most have a big fault. In Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, there exist the scenario and it demonstrates that many characters contribute to the lover’s death, but there are some who more involved than others. With this in mind, the character most responsible for Romeo and Juliet’s death is Friar Laurence because he had a chance to stop their relationship and created their last plan.…

The Castle represents man's efforts to prevent death. Regardless of wealth, social position, or popularity, death arrives as an uninvited guest. Prince Prospero symbolizes the end of feudalism. Prospero's inviting only wealthy knights and ladies to his castle at the expense of peasants and commoners represents the socioeconomic divide between landowners and peasants that existed during the feudalistic period. It is not coincidental that the Black Death, which reduced the number of workers, led to a demand for labor and played an important role in ending feudalism in Europe. The Ebony Clock is a constant reminder of death and symbolizes the inevitability of it. The revelers could neither stop its pendulum from swinging nor could they prevent…
Do you think you can escape death? I believe that no matter what you do you cannot escape death. William Shakespeare’s Othello is a tragedy in which Othello is Moorish general serving in the city of Venice. Iago is Othello’s friend, but turns on him because Othello promoted Michael Cassio to lieutenant. Iago then begins his evil and malicious deeds against Othello. This leads Othello to turn jealous and kill his wife, Desdemona. Othello then commits suicide. By using imagery, irony, and symbolism, Shakespeare displays the theme of the power that jealousy has to destroy.…
First of all the perspective used in the artwork is very effective. The linear perspective is makes the foreground pop out and the objects in the background are smaller than the objects in the foreground and the middle ground. The perspective of the artwork helps me focus on the main scene of the artwork, that’s death. The first thing we notice about this artwork is a lot of death. And in my opinion the artist wants us to relate this to something that was really going on during the era the painting was created. But we will talk about this later. The artist has used many straight lines and other solid shapes that are very appealing and draws anyone’s attention. On the other hand I think there are a lot of symbols used in this painting such as the cross on the far left hand side, the dead body in the coffin, the bells on the top left hand side corner, and many more.…
The “Chronicle of a Death Foretold” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez tells the story of a murder of a young adult named Santiago Nasar. A citizen of the town goes back years later and talks to people all around the town about the murder and the exact happenings of the people involved during that day. Santiago Nasar is wrongfully accused for taking the virginity of a woman named Angela Vicario, who marries Bayardo San Roman. Bayardo returns her to her house that night when he figures out that she is not a virgin. Bayardo treats women as if they are objects, this is shown when he returns Angela home as if she was broken because she was not a virgin. Santiago Nasar and Bayardo are very similar and different between the way they treat women, the…
