In Sexed Work, Lisa Maher, makes the connection of how drugs and sex workers impact the lives of many of the Bushwick neighborhood women. Growing up as a female in society that undervalues or belittles the role of women creates a notion of low self- esteem and high levels of depression as well as a sense of self worthlessness. However, in Maher’s study, she found that women on the streets did not see themselves as victims but rather resilient in struggling to confront or remake the challenge which constraint them. For example in the streets of Buschwick, the only way to collect crack and make money was for the women to use her body as a service. It was their best plan to get income and allow them to support their drug habits as well as live and survive. Because of this I feel like prostitutes should not be criminalized. Also, In Maher’s research she found that women who work the street manage to maintain boundaries on what sexual acts they will and will not do and they do not see themselves as victims to drugs or to man.
