Guns, should they be outlawed or should outlaws only have guns? In this article “The Right to Arms” by Edward Abbey, explains that weapons have been controlled by other countries besides the United States. A peasant caught with a sword in medieval England would be strung up on a gibbet, they only members of the ruling class to bear arms. The article goes on to say if any of the peasants were to fight they were only allowed to use sickles or clubs. A private citizen known as the “Third Reich”, from Nazi Germany, if one of them had possession of a firearm their statutory penalty was that they would be hung. The Soviet Union would have their citizen beheaded if they were in possession of firearms. It was noted that ownership of firearms in the Soviet Union, are decided upon the monopolies of the state. This meant that they had control of the trade or business. With this being said some of the landowners were authorized to have firearms for the sole purpose for hunting.…
In 1990, an article titled, "The Right to Bear Arms" was published in Parade Magazine. The article, written by former Chief Justice of the United States (1969-86), Warren E. Burger addressed issues on the second amendment. In this article, he examines the needs of society to have guns when the Bill of Rights was drafted versus modern day society, using logic and history to appeal to his audience. While not necessarily taking a standpoint against the second amendment's right given to bear arms, he criticizes the regulations on handguns, suggesting there should be more in place in order for levels of violence to decrease.…
Only Washington, D.C. prevents concealed carry except for both active and retired law enforcement officers. This article explores both sides of the concealed carry debate. For example, between May 2007 and March 2010 statistics reveal that nine law enforcement officers and 142 non-law enforcement individuals were killed by concealed carry handgun permit holders across the nation. It is also statistically significant to note that the majority of those who legally carry concealed do not abuse their rights and are non-violent. While it may seem obvious that criminals are less likely to attack someone that they believe might be armed, it is also important to emphasize that handguns are not an effective form of self-defense often resulting in injury and death for the individual carrying. A concealed handgun significantly increases the chances of a confrontation escalating in violence to a lethal degree. The risk of suicide is magnified as a vast majority of all suicide attempts are done in times impulsiveness where not only owning, but carrying a handgun gives an individual a method to act. There are those proponents of concealed carry who will tout the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution as a proof that citizens, who are to bear arms for a well-regulated militia, should be entitled to personal carry. Those on the anti concealed…
Does the government have the right to regulate guns? According to former Chief Justice Warren E. Burger it does. In his article, published in the January 14, 1990, issue of Parade, titled The Right to Bear Arms, Warren feels that changes need to be made to the second amendment of our constitution in order to save peoples lives. He opens the essay with a statistic that states that many of the United State’s major centers have up to ten times the murder rate of all of Western Europe.…
Citizens have been bearing arms since the beginning of time, but in today’s time it is becoming more of a problem. Having the proper gun control would play a major part in decreasing the crime and murder rate in the US. The second amendment states, “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”…
As Americans we have civil liberties. Civil liberties are basic rights and freedoms that are guaranteed to American citizens (Thompson). For example, as Americans one of our civil liberties is to keep and bear arms. In our society, this civil liberty has become an issue due to several incidents involving firearms. Therefore, a bill has been constructed threatening our right to bear arms. I feel that as Americans we have many reasons that we should have this civil liberty is because the right to bear arms involved in the second and fourth amendments. The second amendment clearly states “a well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right if the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. If our government can take away our rights like it’s nothing, then what else can they take from us? We have many rights as Americans. The right to bear arms is one of the biggest. Some of the reasons why we shouldn’t have guns banned are second and fourth amendments, hunting, they will not end deaths, and how there are many other reasons of death that we should be worried about. Although these are just among the few that I have mentioned there are plenty more reasons why Americans should be able to have guns in our nation.…
Guns are used 2.5 million times a year in self defense. Armed citizens kill more criminals than police do. They shoot and kill twice as many in a year then they do. Which is something cool to know about concealed carry. Although, the second amendment of the US constitution allows citizens to bear arms, adults should have the right to concealed carry, because criminals are less likely to attack someone that might have a gun, criminals carry concealed carry regardless of legality, and carrying a concealed weapon could help stop all of the shooting sprees.…
Because of this, it may be in the citizens’ favor to ban or limit the availability and ownership of these sorts of guns. Furthermore, many people want to be able to possess guns in order to protect themselves, however research shows that they are rarely used for self defense. Some people use self defense as a reason for having looser gun control law, but “Of the 29,618,300 violent crimes committed between 2007 and 2011, 0.79% of victims (235,700) protected themselves with a threat of use or use of a firearm”. Since it is very uncommon that victims even use guns for protection, it seems unnecessary that America allows everyone to possess such a dangerous weapon after all the people that have been put in danger because of it. In conclusion, for all the devastation guns have caused, America should have stronger gun control laws as it is very important to think about the lives and safety of the citizens above all…
Gun Safety has been a big topic that people are speaking of all the time. The Second Amendment says that citizens have the right to bear arms. That amendment was created for militias as America had become free and they didn’t want any surprise attacks from Britain incase they tried to take America back, now America and Britain are close allies. Everyday on the news there’s always a shooting and maybe it’s because guns are easy to access. I do not think that civilians need guns. Now some might argue that the police are corrupt and that they don’t want to rely on the police to do something that they can handle but that is their job. If guns are banned than their needs to be higher protection against smuggling as criminals will obviously not…
Shootings, massacres and suicides. The united States of America has extrememly high rates of each compared to every other country in the world. Why, you may ask? It's all down to the second amendment to its constiution - the right to bear arms. Firearm regulations and laws are subtly varied in each country and though most governments are iron-fisted when it comes to guns. Nevertheless, North America is exceedingly leiniet and the majority of its population is entitled to legal firearm ownership.…
The freedom to bear arms has always been guaranteed in the second amendment for the longest. Many people and groups are trying to pretend that the constitution does not exist. These pope, are trying to band all weapons and reduce the rate that they sell at to reduce the crime rate. Gun control in my opinion will not stop someone from finding a weapon and purchasing it, there will always still be ways to find and use weapons even with gun control. The constitution was written and produced to be permanent for the people of the United States and not re done or messed with. People were raised by conservative parents back in the day.…
Bang, bang bang! I heard gun shots. It came from the house across the street. Apparently someone broke into the house and the robber had a gun and was ready to fire, but because of gun rights my neighbor had a gun also and he was able to protect his family and himself. "Imagined what would of happened if we didn't have that right and I didn't have a gun?" he told me. I told him that that was true. Gun rights are a good thing. It can protect us. Also if there weren't any gun rights what would we do with all the guns, we wouldn't be able to get rid of them all. If we didn't have gun rights our rights are being violated.…
The banning of firearms in America is an illegal act, and degrades the values this country was founded on. They not only play a vital role in many people's lives, but are useful tools, fun to use, and can protect people from harm. Our founding fathers wanted us to have them to protect ourselves from the government, and would be disgusted at our government's current abuse, and overall disregard of the constitution of the United States. A lot of people argue that guns kill people; this is untrue. Guns in the hands of a negligent person have potential to kill people, just as anything else.…
Allowing more people to have the right to carry a concealed weapon will decrease crimes. By having a variety of people being able to carry a concealed weapons permit meaning women/men, police officers, security guards. This includes having police officers in public schools to make the children safer. The right to bear arms decreases crimes, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. Personnel who open carry or concealed carry are less likely to be assaulted or robbed. The criminals are the only ones for gun control for their own protection. That way they can increase the robbery percentage. Protecting the 2nd amendment rights for all individuals to bear arms benefits Americans by decreasing violence, rape, and…
Gun rights and gun control are always hot items during any political discussion, whether it is between peers or politicians. One of the many great advantages to being an American is the ability to choose for one's own self what to believe in, another advantage, in my opinion, is the right of the people to keep and bear arms. It is my intention over the next several pages to make you aware of my point of view on the issue of gun rights. I will bring up arguments for gun rights and against gun control, citing all sources used. Some topics to be discussed are the Second Amendment, media influence on weapons violence, and the effects of crime rates in areas that allow open or concealed carry. I would like to preface with some safety notes, clearly nobody should be using a weapon they do not feel safe operating or have no knowledge of how it operates. But this is not always the case, according to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, 606 Americans lost their lives through unintentional firearm injuries in 2010 (1). These unnecessary deaths could have been prevented with safety training and weapons familiarization. Another important aspect of safety is that role models reduce accidents, meaning if you practice safety and are knowledgeable about the local laws, those who look up to you will behave responsibly as well.…
