Leviticus 19:13 states that one should not defraud or rob one’s neighbor, nor should they hold back the wages of a hired worker overnight. This means that we should faithful and trustworthy to our neighborhood. Jesus also said that we must love our neighbors as we love ourselves and this is one of greatest commandment (Mark 12:31). To care for our neighborhood is very biblical and one of the center of Christian teachings. Our neighbor also could our brothers, sisters, parents and friends. The word defrauds simply means taking someone’s property or money illegally. As we are Christian this kind of behavior is unspiritual, unacceptable and lawlessness. Besides, it is contradict to the teaching of Jesus Christ. If we hate each other and rob our neighbor, no one will safe and worry for our families. As a result, our community will be like hell. In contrast, when we love and care for our neighbors, we will have and make a better community and feel the test of heavenly happiness. To hold back the wages of a hired worker overnight could be understandable according our world in these days because most of government’s offices and companies give workers’ wages once in a month. However, I think according to the culture of the author, workers could have paid every day as they worked. I believe that verse 13 is talking about to give the wages of a hired workers according to their agreement. Treat them as the way we want to be treated.
Deuteronomy 25:13-15 said that we should not have two different weights which one heavy and one light in my bag. Besides, I should not have different measures one large and one small in my house. I must have accurate and honest weights and measures, so that I may live well in the land that God has given me. According my observation, in Western world they use digital weights and I think they are mostly accurate. However, in my country we still a kind of basket for measuring weights. I myself witness some people using a light weight for selling and they use a heavy weight when they buy things from the productions. Thus from my childhood I always do not admire those kinds of injustice behaviors. As the Bible teach us to be righteous and holy before God and man, we need to be honest and justice in our actions. If we do so, God will surely bless upon small or big amount of the money we make and will be able to enjoy his blessing.
King David states that good will come to those who are willing to give willingly and lend money freely, and who do their works with justice (Ps. 122:5). Giving is one of the biblical teachings and it is blessing. God shares us his riches and blessing in the same way it is good to share our blessing to others who need help. It very difficult to run after good things but this verse very clearly said that good will come to us if we give willing and work with justice.
Proverbs 22:16 talks about two different kind of people who oppresses the poor to increase his wealth and who gives gifts to the rich. Ultimately, these kinds of people come to poverty. Many times the bible teaches us about loving the poor. This verse is warning about how dangerous is oppressing to the poor. Besides, it is about how it is unnecessary to give gifts to the rich and it is much better to give to the poor.
Jeremiah 22:13 is about destruction upon who builds his richness in injustice ways and who do not want to pay for their labor. I think this is about salivary. When Israel people were in Egypt, they were not paid for their hard works. Thus, the picture is very clear that if we do not want to pay our labor then we are like the Egyptian in the Bible time.
James 5:4 states that the workers whom you failed to pay are crying out against you and the Lord have heard their cries. When we do not pay the wages to the workers, they will hate us and unwilling to work for us anymore. Some might even cruse us. God is justice upon every one and He is one who known everything we do. Therefore, if we are justice, righteous and honest God will surely give prosperity. However, if we against the poor and injustice to others then God will surely judge us and our destiny will end up in poverty.
