1. Introducing proxemics

E.T.Hall (1990 p 161)
Proxemics is a concept that which is defined as the use and perception of one’s social and personal space, such as in seating and spatial arrangements, territoriality and conversational distance and orientation. (Knapp, 1971) Hall (1963), the founding father of proxemics, defines the term ‘proxemics’ as “the spatial dimension of nonverbal behavior” (p.122) In simple words, Proxemics can be defined as the study of means in which individuals make use of the physical space in the interaction between the individuals. Each and every organism in the universe tries to occupy, cultivate, preserve and utilize space. This process of owning the space by above said means differ from culture to culture. There are three fundamental areas with which the experts in the field categorize Proxemics which is ‘Distance’(intimate-personal-social-public), ‘Spaces’and ‘Modes of behavior and perception’.(the eight variables of Proxemics behavior identified by Hall)

South korea had big and fast growth in their economy by succesful intustrialization at 20th centuary. In industrialized society the people start to spend money for their happiness. There’s a new equition-what you purchase and where you spend is describes who the person you are. Consuming space defines the person’s lifestyle(which place one like to go,shop,drink,eat etc)
This urban culture continue to encorage individualism and concept of private space, in Korea there’s no enough space for everyone and there’s more continuing relationship between parents and childeren. So young koreans decided to escape from house and choose café as their private space. Which is very ironical because it’s basically
