For centuries, stories have been told amongst people all around the world. As time went on, people have searched for ways to help better memorize these stories. Stories were often written down by those who could write, which at the time was a small percent of people in the world. For those that couldn't write, they had no choice but to pass stories on verbally. These people soon realized that over time, stories are not always told properly, or are purposely changed. Stories told by song are not only kept the same, but they are also easier to remember. For example, during slavery, slaves depended on songs to lead them to freedom. One song was "Follow the Drinkin' Gourd." This song gave specific instructions on how to follow the stars, evade…

The reader can infer that sounds in the poem are coming from line 1, 4, and 6. In line one the writers says the eagle clasps the crag with crooked hands, I can hear the eagles sharp talons scratching against the rocks. In line four the writer says the wrinkled sea beneath him crawls in that line I can hear the gentle waves splashing against big rocks. In line six the author says and like a thunderbolt he falls in this line I hear a eagle swooping down to the ground with wind whistling through his wings. This show that the author uses good words in describing the actions of the eagle.…

In the article “On Bullshit,” written by Harry Frankfurt published by Princeton University in 1986, Frankfurt tries to explain and develop an understanding of the term bullshit. The essay was originally written for the Raritan Quarterly Review and then was turned into a New York Times bestselling book in 2005 (“On Bullshit”, 2017). Frankfurt tries to equate the term bullshit across cultural lines and how the term is meant for persuasion and not just an expletive. He also explores the broken-down definition of the term and how it affects the term that we know today.…

With the upcoming presidential elections, citizens of the Unites States will soon be asked to vote. It can be quite challenging to be completely educated on all subject matter that the candidates use to promote their campaigns. So when your distant family member asks for opinion about a subject at the dinner table and you don’t really know anything about that particular subject, what do you say? Or you could bullshit it, just like you did in your English class for the essays, and seem like you know what you’re talking about in front of the rest of the family. But what really is bullshit and is it a good thing to use?…

Only owning a hedgehog for a few weeks, I quickly realized that the poor thing got rather dirty. Small pieces of the cage liner and nesting materials easily became lodged between the quills that covered his back. Bathing a hedgehog can't be that difficult. I remembered back to the instructions the pet store clerk told me. Use tear free soap, scrub him with a toothbrush, and use a flannel like fabric to dry him. Determined to make my hedgehog look as pristine as possible I pursued the necessary materials. I quickly found an unused toothbrush and the tear free soap, but the flannel fabric seemed silly. I’m not entirely sure what flannel really was, so I decided to use a regular old towel instead. After inspecting the towels tag,…

In 1989 William Lutz published a book called “Doublespeak” which talked about how doublespeak has been used in our day to day communication from the public to the government. Doublespeak is usually referred as a language to misguide the audience or it is a language “that pretends to communicate but really doesn’t”. It is a language used to communicate the bad news seemingly in a pleasant way. Doublespeak can be categorized in four kinds; first kind is euphemism, second kind is Jargon, third kind is gobbledygook, and the fourth type is inflated language.…

    1. Doublespeak is the ability to use vague truths and positive deflecting language to redirect a person’s opinion or view on a potentially caustic issue. While not an actual act of lying, doublespeak is structured in such a way that it subconsciously nudges us to accept a more positive form of reality as truth, even if a clearly adverse topic is being presented or confirmed. The structure of doublespeak is enthusiastically circular; it never allows direct confirmation of an undesirable condition or event, yet proposes a more palatable outlook on the topic in question. Careful verbiage is used to discourage the ingesting of a topic in an undesirable interpretation, and to afford the audience more promising descriptions and thought processes to consume instead. Professor Lutz maintains that the doublespeak words actually manifest themselves as the perceived reality, thus softening the blow of a negative situation with optimistic language and careful inflection. A string of positive words is a lot easier to objectify and accept as truth than the actual act of a catastrophe or other harmful action. / For one to refer to their self as democratic, he or she has to believe in the fundamental ideology behind democracy. Government transparency and absolute power…

Many writers on their venture to becoming great, are faced with roadblocks. I too feel those stresses. When sitting down to begin a story, novel, or poem we all strive to be different. But as Baldwin explains, "there is no original thought, because we all humans think and feel has been thought and felt so many times before, by so many generations." This in itself makes starting writing a very daunting task. Not to mention the sea of fellow authors you are competing with for limited shelf space. A trip to a jam packed bookstore reiterates this feeling instantaneously. Really, what sets the writer apart is the original perspective and finding out what shape to give it to really hold the readers attention. This can all be achieved through the power in…

    Poetry: Poem Analysis

The works we studied within Creative Writing were all helpful in creating my own works to submit to the class. Throughout all of the reading, many of the works inspired me in different ways, whether it was short story plot ideas or word usage in the poems. While crafting my work for the final portfolio, I reviewed many of the poems from our poetry packet in an effort to find inspiration and to create new interesting images. I took the most inspiration for my formal poem, which I found most difficult to write. One of the poems that was most useful to me was Jilly Dybka’s “Memphis, 1976.” Dybka’s poem follows the sestina form; I also wrote my last poem in this form, so it helped to follow the form by looking at her poem as an example. Dybka’s…
