Research Methods

List the advantages and disadvantages of the following research methods:

Research Method | Advantages | Disadvantages | Case Study | One major advantage of the case study in psychology is the potential for the development of original hypotheses for later testing. Second, the case study can provide detailed descriptions of specific and rare cases | The case-control study method is highly susceptible to recall bias as it relies on memory and records to establish the exposure status. Researchers should select subjects of case-control study at random, although this is at times very difficult to attain, since they may fail to diagnose some diseases or give the wrong diagnosis.

| Correlational Method | Correlational research allows researchers to collect much more data than experiments. Furthermore, because correlational research usually takes place outside of the lab, the results tend to be more applicable to everyday life. Another benefit of correlational research is that it opens up a great deal of further research to other scholars. When researchers begin investigating a phenomenon or relationship for the first time, correlational research provides a good starting position. It allows researchers to determine the strength and direction of a relationship so that later studies can narrow the findings down and, if possible, determine causation experimentally.

| Correlation research only uncovers a relationship; it cannot provide a conclusive reason for why there is a relationship. A correlative finding does not reveal which variable has influential power over the other. Also, a third, unknown variable might be causing both.

| Experimental Method | Experiments are the only means by which cause and effect can be established. It allows for precise control of variables. Experiments can be replicated. We cannot generalize from the results of a single experiment. | The potential disadvantages with the experimental method are that the lab setting may inhibit natural behavior; findings may not generalize to real world; potential for unethical or impossible experiment. Other potential problems include -· Selection Bias,· Placebo effect,· Experimenter bias |

From an individual perspective, the case study approach provides clear information on that area. Secondly, is the correlational approach which enables researchers to identify certain variables and how each relate each other in the study of personality. Lastly, is the experimental approach which bases its findings on manipulation of certain variables. More importantly is that all these approaches result in findings on personality of individuals (Schwartz, et.al,…

The artificiality of inventive conditions in experimental environments is a repeated concern. How real can laboratory-based research be? This paper will explain the criticism of artificiality in the discipline of psychology and apply this criticism to at least three sub disciplines within psychology. This paper will also compare and contrast the breakthrough model of scientific research and the principle of connectivity in explaining events and outcomes; finally ending with comparing and contrasting the concepts of the single cause explanation and the principle of multiple causation in explaining events and outcomes.…

A laboratory experiment is a conducted under highly controlled conditions. It is the most commonly used when conducting experiments. However this only happens when the research manipulated the independent variable to see what effect it has on the dependent variable in the experiment during research. By changing the independent variable, and measuring the dependent variable, we control the confounding variables (E.V.s) others as much as possible. This allows a more reliable conclusion to be drawn up than with a non-experimental method. When the independent variable is the only variable that changes then it must be responsible for any change in the dependent variable.…

Experimental research is the key to finding causal relationships between variables. In this research, the experimenter at random assigns participants to one of two groups: the control group and the experimental group. The control group receives no action and serves as a baseline. Researchers control the levels of some independent variable in the experimental group and then measure the effects. Because researchers are able to control the independent variables, experimental research can be used to find causal relationships between variables.…
