Part One
• You are the news director of a local television station. The city council has just voted to close city parks 3 days a week to save money. Meanwhile, a major celebrity has died. The park story has greater effect on your viewers, but the celebrity death will get bigger ratings? Which do you make your lead story and why?
As a reporter, ratings are very important and my job stability weighs heavily upon having good network ratings, therefore I must ensure that any story, such as a recent celebrity death that is sure to bring in top ratings, receives adequate coverage and publicity. However, my first responsibility is to provide the public with the information they need on a daily basis and inform them of any current events that may …show more content…
affect their lives directly so it my moral obligation to make these types of stories a top priority. I believe I have an ethical duty to structure the story regarding the City council’s decision to close several parks my lead story because that is the story that will have the most significant impact on my audience.
The primary roles of today’s media in news delivery are to educate and inform their audience about any matters that may have an impact on their daily lives, to keep them up-to-date on current events going on all around the world, as well as to provide some level of entertainment value. With the technological advances we’ve had over the years, the availablility and delivery methods of the news has undergone many significant changes over the last hundred years. From the primitive days of receiving news via hand-printed newspapers, telegram, wire or even carrier pigeon to the various methods available today, such as radio, television, internet and social media sites, and mobile downloads have evolved news media from being old news to being true current events. The immediate availability of news has many advantages like the fact that it keeps the public aware of what is going on in the world around them and how they may be affected and allows for immediate action to be taken if necessary. Although, there are still some draw backs in immediate disclosure. For example, not having time to necessarily gather all the facts before releasing a story. Therefore, it is extremely important to have ethical and legal consideration online and in other media forms and to be cautious of illegal information usage, violations of privacy rights, or copyright infringement cases. The media has a social responsibility to provide accurate, unbiased news to the public and to behave in an ethical manner and respect the privacy rights of all individuals. Although advanced, today’s media delivery methods are not without issues. Not being 100% factual, media overload and repetition and technical issues can cause news media to be less effective in the public eye.
WEEK 9-FINAL ASSIGNMENT
Part Two: Cultural effects of Movies, Television and Video Games
With the exception of fantasy based movies like Harry Potter, Avatar, and Lord of the Rings, many of today’s most popular films and television shows directly reflect society today.
Making films relevant to today’s culture is a key factor to their success because it gives people something they can related to and identify with. If you have a personal connection to the topic of a film then not only are you more likely to be interested in it and want to go see it but it will more than likely end up being one of your favorites so you'll recommend it to friends and family and maybe when it gets released on DVD you'll rent it or even buy it. Filmmakers need to choose topics that appeal to the public because that is how they make more money. Television and movies are a part of our everyday life and therefore their relationship to culture is on that is ongoing and has a constant significant effect on one another. While films are often a reflection of today’s society, changes in culture are often a result of something seen on television or in a movie. For example, our hairstyles, speech patterns, and clothing styles are all greatly influenced by things we’ve seen in a movie or on our favorite
shows.
Video games have also had an extremely significant effect on our culture and have managed to stir up quite a lot of controversy along the way as well. Since their beginning when video games were only for nerds and social outcasts, gaming has evolved into a multi-million dollar industry and has become the most popular past-time among children and young adults today, and have gone from geek to sheik. Although widely popular, video games are definitely not without their critics and have been accused of being the key contributing factor to current issues in society such as childhood obesity, anti-social tendencies and even violent behavior. While there are many violent and intense games available on the market, such as Call of Duty or Halo, there are also alternatives available and as adults it is up to us to monitor the content we allow our children to be exposed to and not blame the gaming industry as a whole because in creating these types of games they are only doing their job by creating games based on the content that sells the best. The gaming industry has recently made many attempts to redeem themselves and their reputations by creating alternative options to those containing violent or sexually explicit material that can be enjoyed by the entire family. Games have also become more interactive with the introduction of online gaming and are now much more socially engaging than ever before. Game designers have also taken steps to help battle the threat of obesity in children and adults by creating interactive games like WII Fit, Rockband and Dance Dance Revolution that get kids to be active and get in some exercise while playing their favorite games.
