Obedience and Conformity By most definitions, if we are persuaded by an individual, we are said to be obedient to that individual. If we are persuaded by a group, we are said to have conformed to that group’s objectives. Compare and contrast the core differences between these two concepts. In what ways do group and individual persuasion techniques differ? As social beings, why are we naturally prone to conformity and obedience? For this discussion, please review Solomon Asch’s (1958) study of conformity. The results of this study, demonstrate how many of the individual participants conformed to the group despite the fact that the group was clearly wrong, and the individuals were clearly right. In addition, watch the video on the ABC New Primetime: Milgram Experiment Update video. Through this experiment we observe how perceptions of authority directly influence obedience. For example, even when the action ordered by the authority figure caused physical harm, the participants were still obedient. What are some explanations for this type of behavior? Can you think of an example of when you disregarded your own desires or values for the sake of obedience or conformity? Respond substantively to at least two of your classmates' posts.

What is the influence of other group member's opinions on the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of an individual. What if we are not sure how to act in a certain situation. As stated in the text "we know other people conform, we underestimate the extent to which we can be induced to follow the group" (Aronson, p.23,2012). Groups have influence on ambiguous and unambiguous situations. In an individualistic culture, such as that of the US, conformity connotes something negative. However as a society we still need to master the world, and be connect by others. Thus people conform to the opinion of other group members and yield to social norms. As stated by Aronson,…

Regardless of one’s religion, social classes or political views, we are all susceptible to an innate type of conformity — groupthink. Groupthink is a psychological phenomenon that occurs inside a group of people in which the outcome of their decision is lopsided because of the tendency for the people inside the party to choose conformity over disagreement that can result in an irrational decision-making conclusion. The stronger an in-group’s loyalty, the more blind decision one’s group will actively make. Doris Lessing, gave a lecture called “ Group Minds’. Lessing described western societies to be free and educated types of individual. Her concern is will these individual able to generate an idea about themselves as a whole. The author’s…

Conformity experiments demonstrate a person’s behavior based on the group's decision regardless whether the individual knows it’s wrong. The factors the contribute to a personal judgment that leads to conformity are peer pressure and the social influence to fit in ("Module 11.4: Conformity, Compliance, and Obedience." n.d). For example, a person will more likely agree on the wrong answer in history class if the other students chose that answer as well. This is also another reason why election votes are held in private areas, so the person’s vote would not impact by a group.…

Participants were given ¡¥Low¡¦ (50%), ¡¥Accurate¡¦ or ¡¥High¡¦ (150%) examples. Result shows that participants tend to be influenced by examples given to them. Participants who were given ¡¥Low¡¦ examples had lower answers than those given ¡¥Accurate¡¦ examples while participants given ¡¥High¡¦ examples had higher answers than those given ¡¥Accurate¡¦ examples.…

    Why We Conform to Groups

    • 5 Pages

Most people on this Earth are part of some group, whether they believe it or not. They have a group of friends, family, or co-workers whom they share a lot of time and space with. These groups that we are part of in our daily lives have a huge impact on our decision making. Chances are high that if the group an individual is a part of feels that option A is better than option B, the individual will think as their group does and pick option A, even if they know that option B is really what they would rather pick. The influence the groups we are a part of have on our decision making is enormous, we will dress like them, act like them, think like them, and believe what they believe, simply to fit it and not stand apart from the group.…
