When deciding on a research question, I wanted to choose a topic that really interested me, so I chose obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). This topic has been used in my household for a long time as I was diagnosed with it at 5 years old. When doing this research I wanted to learn of other treatments and tools for people with OCD. This is very important because the spectrum of OCD cases varies significantly, so some of these people dealing with the disorder have a large decision to make when it comes to their treatment options. There is a stigma about people with obsessive compulsive disorder; they are thought about in negative ways and sometimes are even considered freaks. I feel that psychology focuses on this issue a lot because it is becoming more and more prevalent in our society, and it can pose as a great hindrance on someone’s life.…

Pediatric Behavioral Health Collaborative Care Program represents the model of Close collaboration at the outpatient general pediatric clinic. Children are referred by general pediatricians and remain in the care of the pediatrician after the consultation unless children need more intense care. Wait lists are shorter than in the classis system where children are referred to the psychiatric clinic. Anxiety & Cognitive Behavioral Consultation Clinic utilizes a model of Co-location at the outpatient specialty pediatric site. Specialists including neurologist, gastroenterologists and cardiologist refere patients to behavioral health specialist. Pediatric specialists except neurologist in majority of the cases do not choose to prescribe psychotropic medication and prefer follow up for medication at the psychiatric clinic. Child continues to see a therapist at the pediatric specialty clinics so all systems except billing is…

My hope for this literature review is to shine some light on a prevalent issue that affects college students all over the United States. Binge drinking and eating disorders are becoming the two biggest health-related issues on college campuses. They can lead to alcohol abuse, obesity, and a host of other ailments. A web-based study (Weeder, 2011) from a private university collected data using a very descriptive self-report survey. The students were offered extra credit if they completed the survey. The students were emailed, and also told that not completing the survey would not hurt their grade. They used courses that represented a large cross-section of students. A total of 211 undergraduate students participated in the study. They used male and female samples. Binge drinking in this sample was very high for males, 86% of male students and 63% of females reported binge drinking within the past two weeks. Binge eating was reported lass than binge drinking 48% of the sample was reported. The percentage of females who did both was 34% and for males it was 39%. The results of this survey were high compared to the national date comprised before hand. Also the students of this survey were predominately white and have been known to binge drink more than other racial groups (Wechsler, 2002) There are some limitations that can affect the validity of the survey. Students could have been untruthful when answering the survey; also extra credit was offered to them to complete the survey. Women also had more risky weight loss behaviors such as self-induced vomiting, laxatives, diet pills, and skipping meals.…

Imagine an alternate universe where it was seen as morally reprehensible to consume cheese. What if brie, cheddar, and worst of all pepper jack, were considered abominations and any American who was caught consuming or producing the delectable dairy product would be deemed societal deviant and could be jailed indefinitely or thrown into a mental ward until medical professionals decide that you have been adequately cured of your dairy addiction? It seems strange that something that comes across so naturally can be decided by a majority to be deviant and outside of the norm; yet this was exactly how many in the gay community felt in the early seventies when being homosexual was considered to be a mental disorder. In 81 Words (Spiegel 2002), an episode of the popular radio show This American Life, Alix Spiegel, granddaughter of former American Psychological Association president-elect John P. Spiegel, discusses the climate during the demedicalization of homosexuality from being a mental disorder.…
