Mental health is a very significant issue in today’s society, and understanding the key differences between Psychologists and Psychiatrists can help alleviate common misconceptions of mental health. Psychiatrists focus brain chemistry, the psychological effects of pharmaceutical drugs, and monitor the patient's condition through the adjustment of medication. Psychologists focus on analyzing a person’s mental well being, through conversation in a safe and constructive environment. Although becoming a Psychiatrist and Psychology emphasize improving mental well being, some variables to consider are the required education, annual wage, and the difference in work environment.
Even though Psychiatrists and Psychologists study the psychological aspects of the brain and mental health, the type of education varies between these two fields of work. Psychiatrists are required to get an undergraduate science degree before attending a medical school (Ryback M.D., 2004). Being a M.D. requires Psychiatrists have knowledge of basic body functions, treatment plans, and make medication adjustments.
Although being a Psychiatrist can benefit someone interested in scientific research who is motivated to complete medical school, being a Psychologist is an easier goal for the average person to achieve. A psychologist focuses on mental health aspects of redefining perspective and behavior ,requiring less education and more time spent evaluating possible solutions on improving mental health. A psychiatrist focuses on the imbalance in brain chemistry, and the development of medication to improve the lives of the patients. While both psychiatrists and Psychologists have job growth and more research being done about mental health, it’s important to consider the educational goal of both
