People have stopped having meals together due to conflicting schedules and they disregard the importance of family time. According to Susie Burrell, a journalist for the Advertiser,

In the 1900’s food was starting to be advertised and the food was simple, due to the Great Depression, and was often food that could be hunted or scavenging. In the 40’s the Second World War was ongoing, which caused a dramatic decrease in food. American food was introduced as Americans came to Australia during the war and influenced the type of food found in Australia. The Americans would demand to have unhealthy products such as hamburgers, canned sweet corn, and Coca-Cola. This lead to the introduction of Takeaway restaurants. After the war, immigration introduced an increase in cooking techniques and knowledge in restaurant trades.
When women entered the workforce, there was more disposable money and less time to prepare the meals. This lead to an increase in buying almost all of a household’s groceries at a supermarket and less food was made at home. In the 70’s more and more people were moving into the city, as their incomes grew. As the consumption of animal products, sugars, fats, takeaway foods increased due to the upsurge in income.
