Jim Steven’s poem “Schizophrenia” depicts a story of immense loss and hopelessness that overcomes many homes. It is all too ordinary to hear about a father abandoning his family, a mother who is broken and feels defeated, and the children who have suffer through it all in fear and the overwhelming feeling of abandonment. Feelings such as those found in the preceding sentence are found throughout Jim Steven’s poem “Schizophrenia”. The poem reflects the conflicts that occur within the house. However, the crisis that is occurring within the family is addressed indirectly rather than directly, it is addressed through personifying the house. By personifying the house in every facet, “Schizophrenia” reveals the reality of the family’s relationships, or lack thereof.…
Jacks McNamara had a hard life from the start. Growing up tangled in a web of abuse and alcohol she was forced out of a childlike purity to face the harsh world at a young age which likely triggered many of her struggles with mental illness. And, though the circumstances that pushed her down a path towards insanity would be bitter and rough for any child, she did not think of the insanity they thrust on her as a punishment or burden. Despite her admitted struggles with mental illness she thought of it as a blessing, finding that at her best pieces of artwork often came from her closest calls with tripping over the edge into insanity. And, while David Foster Wallace did not seem to have a “trigger” or “stem” of his depression he had a similar…
Charles Milles Maddox more commonly known as Charles Manson was born on November 12, 1934, in quaint town of Ohio. His mother a 16-year-old adolescent was both an alcoholic and prostitute who cared little about his wellbeing and placed him in a school for boys. Growing up, Charles spent a substantial amount of time incarcerated for charges consisting of pimping, and fraud. Ironically, while imprisoned he utilized his artistic talents and gained knowledge on how to read music and play the guitar (Biography). After being released from prison in March of 1967, and in 1667, the year proceeding, he became the forefront and mastermind of a deadly crusade that would make him the most notorious individual in all of criminal history (Biography).…
The film I chose to watch is the original Psycho, filmed in 1960 and directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The story of Chris McCandless shows a rebellious free spirit trying to live his life to the fullest. But is the story as black and white as it looks? “Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer is a true story about the adventure of Chris McCandless. He travels around the country and mooches off people before he goes to Alaska and tragically dies. The early trauma to Chris caused him to be mentally unstable. Due to the similarities from Chris’ childhood and the authors I believe there has to be a romanticization of the story to better fit his ideal self. The author is manipulating the story to make the idea of living off the land and being a rebel better than it truly is. Chris could have had a possible mental illness as a result of early childhood…
Jason Bourne is a weapon rather than a person, the reason is that when conflict arises in situations, he seems to always know how to handle it. It’s as if Jason Bourne was made to only serve Treadstone, rather than his own personal feelings. I believe Jason Bourne only remembers his training because when he falls into the sea, his self-conscious is ashamed of his past. Therefore, he only deletes his memories, to forget his…
In his book, Memory 101, Dr. James Lampinen (2015) described amnesia to be memory loss and the reduction of memory abilities that is independent to other cognitive abilities. He also explained how the limitations and abilities of people with amnesia showed how memory is comprised of a number of independent systems. This is the most likely explanation of the multiple types of amnesia that have been observed and the multiple variants within each type. Variants could include factors such as; the kinds of memories lost, the number of memories lost, the amount of time they are lost, and the potential…
The area of the brain that was damaged is the hippocampus; this was due to the total amnesia that was a result from his illness. The hippocampus is the region of the brain that relocates memories from the short-term memory to the long-term memory. “Wearing is not capable of forming new memories because his memory only last between 7 and 30 seconds” (MedLibrary, 2002, p. 1).…
Infantile amnesia is the inability to remember events that happened in early childhood before age 3. This is not caused by the time gap, because a person has an autobiographical memory that recalls many personally meaningful one-time events from the past.…

This paper began years ago when, as a police officer, and later as an instructor in the private sector working with military special forces units, I came into contact with sufferers of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and began to wonder how best to help them. During independent study of the subject I sought to understand the signs and symptoms, as well as the risk factors for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Being that police officers are frequent sufferers of this disorder, and that many more are also former military veterans, it was…
Most of us take for granted our ability to recall aspects of the past. We may sulk at having to memorize long lists of notes in preparation for an exam. However, many of us do not realize that there are numerous people who suffer from anterograde amnesia due to a severe mental or physical trauma. These individuals struggle to perform tasks that involve even the most menial forms of memorization. Many researchers intrigued with the topic of anterograde amnesia have written scientific articles on the condition, some describing specific aspects of the memory deficit while others investigating possible treatments for it. Two articles concerning anterograde amnesia, “SenseCam as a rehabilitation tool in a child with anterograde amnesia” by Pauly-Takacs et al. and “Widespread cognitive impairment in psychogenic anterograde amnesia” by Kumar et al., each explore the subject in a different light. Pauly-Takacs et al. describes a case study to propose SenseCam as a possible treatment for the condition, as well as provides general information regarding the topic to establish the intended audience as one of ordinary people. Kumar et al. wrote his article to inform the scientific community about a specific type of anterograde amnesia and its effects on overall mental ability, and he uses scientific terms without clarifying their meanings in order to target his writing for an audience of experts.…
The False Memory debate has been a battle between researchers, theorists and investigators of child abusefor several years.False memory refers to the false recollection of a traumatic event that did not occur. It is typically induced during a therapeutic or investigative process where so called recovered memories of childhood abuse are introduced into the minds of vulnerable people. In most cases there are often no pre-existing memories of being abused, and the repressed memories are often recovered shortly after starting therapy or at the onset of an investigation.Incidences of satanic ritual abuse, child sexual and physical abuse and rape are believed to have been unearthed during these investigations..
