Everyone who decides to enroll in college must, at some point, think about what area they want to major in. There are many things that students consider when choosing a major. Some make their decision based on what they think can make them the most money once they begin their lives in the work force. However, many students believe that if you choose a major that interests you and challenges you then you can use those skills that can help you in any career. (R. Landrum & S. Davis, 2014) Let’s face it. Employers know that when they hire someone straight out of college they are not immediately going to know everything there is to know about their position they were hired for. That is what on-the-job training is for. However, employers do expect college graduates, despite what their major was, to be excellent communicators, be well-rounded, and have the ability to be trained and have the ability to learn new things. Psychology is a degree program that produces those well-rounded, well-educated people. Psychologically literate people have an expansive vocabulary, are able to use scientific thinking, be creative when solving problems by looking at all angles, have integrity, act ethically, and are insightful about others’ behavior and their own. (R. Landrum et al, 2014) Therefore, although obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology is not a professional degree and one cannot be a Psychologist with a Bachelor’s, one gains a myriad of skills that are very marketable no matter the profession one is choosing after graduation. McGovern, Furumoto, Halpern, Kimble, and McKeachie (1991) made this point clear when they stated that “a liberal arts education in general, and the study of psychology in particular, is a preparation for lifelong learning, thinking, and action; it emphasizes specialized and general knowledge and skills.”…

I was shocked at how closely my career interests and my results were matched. Previous to these career building plans we have been doing, I was almost entirely sure I had chosen the right degree to pursue. Now after doing these activities, they have helped solidify that my career choice is definitely appropriate for me, and it aligns with my skills and strengths as well. For instance; researching, is my second largest strength. I already knew that I loved to investigate and dig deeper into things, particularly human behaviors. Therefore, Psychology is the perfect major for me because it is aligned directly with my skills, strengths, and interests.…
It is always so hard to give the exact number of people who have majored in accounting, but one thing that I know is that the demography is very wide and large. This is because they have different reasons for majoring in this career path. The most common reason to all people is because accounting is a marketable career and they merely want to find a job. The number of people majoring in this field is growing immensely and the most important thing is to consider the main reason of joining this profession. Some people will claim that when they were in high school, this was their best subject and they loved it and so they will need to major in it. I believe the best reason for majoring in accounting is because it has wide varieties of career path that one can major in. People should understand that this field is not all about debits and credits. It is more of a communicating language in the world of business and this is why many chief executive officers hold a degree in this field. In the day today life it is usually one of the most common undergraduate degree programs. The most important thing is to make certain that all of the people who are in this profession understand business and that is why many people who have ventured in accounting always have considerations for such posts. The most interesting part of this career choice is that most of the time the people who venture into it will always have the best job positions waiting for them because many people always have a notion that it is a difficult discipline. The employment opportunities are abounding for the graduates majoring in accounting. The government figures shows that at least 1.2 million of jobs are held by accountants every year. According to the Feldmann, 2009 and also the survey done by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA, 2000) the graduates are declining but after revisiting their research in the year 2005, it reflected an increase in number of the accountant graduates. This has…
In this week’s module, which comprised of chapters 1-2 of Careers in Psychology along with instructor Gina Smith’s video, it was evident that the field of psychology is immense and continues to evolve. My impression of the subfield of clinical and counseling psychology was a combination of surprise and captivation. The reading and video painted a picture of rewarding career opportunities available to help people within mental health. It was surprising to learn of entry level career opportunities such as human services assistant roles, entry social worker, and substance abuse counselor available at the baccalaureate level. A variety of the information presented on clinical and counseling psychology was new to me, and created learning opportunities…
A career that I have thinking about and pushed me to join psychology is counselling. Something that I have always wanted to do was to become a high school counselor. I believe that high school is a key part of a person’s life and an available strong guidance counselor is essential. A strong guidance counselor can lead a highschool kid on the right track and this is me speaking from experience. A career path I never thought about going on…
Most graduates with a bachelor’s degree in psychology find work in other fields such as business administration, sales, or education. However, they may be able to find work in the field of psychology as…
After reading the preceding paragraphs you may be wondering “what is the importance of psychology in those three career fields?” and the answer to this is quite simple. Nurses must take care of patients during severe health conditions and deal with their moods and behaviors. When evaluating a patient's condition, nurses not only consider the severity of the illness or the level of pain or discomfort, but they also examine the patient's response. Some patients, for example, remain optimistic…
Psychology is everywhere, surrounding our daily lives. It helps us, humans, to overcome difficult challenges and obstacles we come across. I do not know my future, but what I plan on looking forward too is working as an accountant. As I get up to becoming an accountant, using psychological theories will help me, but having a successful career does not necessarily mean a successful life. In my opinion, a successful life consists of the job you are happy to work for and the family you have always wanted. Throughout the course of this psychology class, the theories and concepts I got the most out of was on child development. Learning psychology is well worth anyone’s time if they want the drive and aim toward a specific goal and it will definitely help me in life.…
I initially enrolled in this Careers in Psychology course because it is a requirement to obtain my bachelor’s degree in Psychology. I hope to learn from the class the basic requirements needed to get accepted into a graduate program and to explore different career options. I became interested the field of Psychology back in 2010, when I began working in the mental health field. Currently, I am a mental health technician and enjoy working with the young adolescents. The more time progressed; I became more intrigued by this field and the reasoning behind people’s actions.…
Coming to this university, all I really knew was that psychology was the science of mental and behavior processes. I knew that psychologists use scientific principles, carefully defined methods, and precise procedures to present an organized body of knowledge and to make predictions about how people behave. However, I had no clue of the progression that would build up to this. In order to learn about the ways others and myself behave in an interesting society, I had to learn how psychologists approach the situation from the perspective of a career.…
While studying the subject at a-level I found psychology very interesting e.g. cognitive and developmental. I thought picking it would give me a further insight to actually choosing my own studies or part-taking in recreating previous ones. The study of the human mind and behaviour etc seem like a popular career path also the fact that psychology now as it develops and becomes more popular it can open up so many career doors as well.…
