AB Foreign Service / 3rd year Public Diplomacy
Homework #1 1. Cite a country that gives preference to the use of hard power over the use of soft power as their public diplomacy. In your opinion, is that country effective in using hard power? Give an example and states your reason why.
A country that gives preference to the use of hard power instead of soft power in relation to their Public diplomacy is China. China is evidently one of the most powerful and developed countries in the world. As the result of its participation in world trade and its consequent growing demand for overseas energy and raw materials, the South China Sea has become an increasingly important resource for Beijing. China claims many Islands across Asia. And one of these is the Spratley Islands (which is rich in oil, natural gases and coral reefs) and claiming it as their own. They even sent many warships on the disputed sea and vehemently enforcing law against the Filipino immigrants.
In my opinion, China’s use of hard power in their public diplomacy is effective. Because they consequently take stand for what they believed for as they were the owner of the disputed island. They strongly stand and never give up its claim. And also; they have strong military power that they can use against the defender countries. Though we have a strong stand, we all know that we can never challenge the military capabilities of China against our military power for it is broad, skilled and well funded investment into armed forces agencies.
