Montgomery City Council Meeting

Montgomery’s city council is a body of elected officials that work together in order to pass ordinances, make policies, supervises city government, and appropriate funds for various needs. Generally, the members of the council are elected by constituents of various districts in the city and are responsible for representing the needs of their district. The work of a council is usually supported by a number of specialized commissions that focus on specific issues like police, urban planning, and public works. Typically, council meetings are open to the public, and public input is welcomed.

On Tuesday, September 18, 2012 The Montgomery City Council took a congratulatory time out from their scheduled agenda to announce that former Chief of Staff for the Montgomery Police Department Brenda Mitchell has been named as the new EMA Director for the city of Montgomery. After allowing her time to comment, it was business as usual for the council. Mayor of Montgomery, Todd Strange opened the meeting with an update of a recent murder that happened the day before near the campus of Alabama State University. He expressed his appreciation for both the campus and city police officers who responded to the incident, remarking that they had done a great job in maintaining the safety of the student and the people of that neighborhood. He then posed the question, “Is Montgomery moving in the right direction?” The city has employed an outside firm to analyze data and access whether the city is progressing and over all, 61% of the citizens say yes. Through a series of charts and graphs, Mayor Strange showed a positive trend in retails shops, restaurants, medical care, jobs, recreation and fighting crime since 2009.
