Mr. Dowie
Public Speaking Argument
4 March 2015
I believe that it is permissible to use deadly force against repeated domestic violence. Domestic violence is the third leading cause of homelessness among families, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. http://portal.hud.gov/hudportal/HUD?src=/press/press_releases_media_advisories/2010/HUDNo.10-248 Permissible: Permitted; allowed
Repeated: done or occurring again several times in the same way
Domestic Violence: violent or aggressive behavior within the home, typically involving the violent abuse of a spouse or partner
Values: My value is Deontology. Deontology is an approach to Ethics that focuses on the rightness or wrongness, of actions themselves,
as opposed to the rightness or wrongness of the consequences of those actions or to the character and habits of the person.
Contentions:
1. My first contention would be to establish that wouldn’t it be considered self-defense if you kill the abuser. Self-defense is the defense of one's person or interests, especially through the use of physical force, which is permitted in certain cases as an answer to a charge of violent crime. If the victim of abuse feels like they could be injured severely or someone else could be then they should have the ability to use deadly force. 2. My second contention would have to be the affects that domestic violence has on children. Children who are abused are greatly affected by it currently and later on in life. “Studies show that child abuse and neglect can negatively impact children's ability to perform well in school, to develop healthy relationships with others, and create social issues with consequences that impact an entire community. For a child who has been abused their chances of getting abused or being the abuser increase. “Without help, girls who witness domestic violence are more vulnerable to abuse as teens and adults” and “Without help, boys who witness domestic violence are far more likely to become abusers of their partners and/or children as adults, thus continuing the cycle of violence in the next generation.
