The charm of Puerto Plato is undoubtedly beyond any negativism or criticism. Puerto Plata lies in the very core of the North Coast taking a turn around the lofty “ Isabel de Torres”, the mountain reachable by the Teleferico, the electrified lifting system. Shaped and sculptured in a varied Victorian architecture, his unique style never captured similar meanings and values nowhere in the region. Unique colourful houses and public buildings confer romantically with the common tourist that is speechless admiring the pastel colours or the gingerbread motifs.

It is quite a paradise lying on a patch between a lagoon and a bay. Cabarets generously provides every tourist with sport facilities such as: tennis, golf, mountain biking, horseback riding, wave surfing and body boarding. Yearly Cabarete has a medium of 75% occupancy rate.( Horwath, 2001) Up to the north Playa Grande is a very audacious tourist project with an annual average occupancy rate of 81%. ( Horwath, 2001)
Costa Verde as it is currently known calls over with its small hotels and deserted white sand and palm trees beaches. It is appealing moreover for the alternative it offers to the big modern resort enclaves.
Puerto Plata is the favourite destination for the European tourists that increased their number in 2000 up to 70.9%. On the contrary the American number decreased to 14,6% the same year.
Between the 1980 and early 1990 the tourism industry was at bloom in Puerto Plata.
The number of tourists coming here was continuously increasing and the flights having Puerto Plata as final destinations grew as well. Puerto Plata was known at the time as a city with a lot of shops and restaurants, small local businesses. These aspects were in fact leading to a new infrastructure in Puerto
