La Llorona is a Mexican Myth about a woman who allegedly drowned her kids, but immediately felt remorse, so she weeps for her children. Following her Woman in White project she began to found and direct the True Colors Mural Project. The project is a public program at Berkeley City College, and is also in collaboration with Berkeley’s Youth Works Program. The program reflects what she’s been trying to do her whole life which is to educate the urban residents, mainly the youth, and to spread positivity through artistic expression. The True Colors programs targets at risk youth from the Berkeley area and areas around there, and helps them to create community murals that may include themes of social justice.…
For her senior thesis Sonia had chosen to write about Luis Munoz Marine “the island’s first governor to be elected rather than appointed by a U.S. president.” (210). She had learned about how different male and female roles were from Puerto Rico compare to the U.S. Woman would marry young at 13 or 14 years of age and in America the woman will wait until they are more established before they marry. The woman of Puerto Rico were expected to be the caregivers of their children, as where in America the woman were much more independent and much more educated. Sonia had learned how different these two world…
Before discussing how the spatial design and use of Evergreen Cemetery was reflective of African-Americans’ current, and hoped for, place within society, the place of the cemetery within African-American communities of the South needs to be established. African-Americans focused on death to such a degree that Booker T. Washington lamented, “The trouble with us is that we are always preparing to die.” (Cited in Roediger 1981:63). The…
We foster and celebrate practices that nurture living and learning in an atmosphere of caring, respect and mutual accountability.1 The cover of the book itself is the epitome of what a community should be. On the cover, there is a picture of a young black boy in the middle of the street, who no one seems to be paying any attention. Although the picture is fixated on him, behind him seems to be a rally of some kind with thousands of people. As they march through the streets holding signs, it is a truly poignant photo. It is a sincerely inspirational sight, which Dr. Hill also describes in his book. After eighteen year-old, Michael Brown, was shot and killed by police, “...crowds of protesters appeared in Oakland, Los Angeles, Dallas, Denver, Washington, Minneapolis, Chicago, Atlanta, and New York [stood] in solidarity” (Hill 12). People were outraged about Michael Brown’s death, and most of them never even met him. It is beautiful to think that all of these people care enough to get together and try to make a change. There is a strength in numbers and those numerous protesters prove…
Jill Lepore quoted what one the two black kids in Port Clinton told Mr. Putman, the black kid said “Your then was not my then, and your now isn’t even my now.”(Lepore 4). She is using the rhetoric of Pathos to show the racism and the discrimination that was directed towards the two black kids in Mr. Putman's class and how they endure hardship in Port Clinton. Racism is the biggest trivial to inequality in the United State of America. The police brutality towards the black since Mr. Putman childhood till now has made a great insight on how the future will looks like, a future of pain and turmoil, the land of peace will become a soil of bloodshed because the Negros will strike to their last blood to accomplish the brutality that the police has started. The current report about the black sniper who shot five police dead during the black lives matters parade in Dallas show the beginning of the decline of the so called greatest nation,…
One artist that emphasizes the idea of community and bringing culture together is Ernesto de la Loza, Colorful Mountain 1975, a painted mural in Estrada Courts. This pastel hued landscape mural filled the concrete walls with this image that hoped to inspire unity, consciousness and hope. Ernesto de la Loza took this space and developed this mural that impacted the public, and developed a visual language that spoke about a culture and experience that was untapped and largely invisible. Estrada Courts were apartments that were intended to address the housing shortage that resulted from the rapid growth of wartime industries. In my eyes, this mural helps people in this community acknowledge their homeland and remember where they come from. By…
120 Days is a documentary that explores issues of immigration in America and it shows what it really means to “be American” through an immigrant’s perspective. Although this country boasts “liberty and justice for all”, and having the opportunities to fulfill the “American dream”, we can see from the Cortes family’s experience that that isn’t completely true. Throughout the film, it is clearly demonstrated that this family is extremely selfless, as they have given so much to their community, even though they don’t have much themselves. In one scene, Miguel and Maria Luisa even receive an award from the mayor of Raleigh for outstanding citizenship. It was incredibly emotional to watch, because this was just 2 months before Miguel’s deportation. No one knew this though, and as a result,…

White supremacy is not a social issue that only affects the United States. In all parts of the world, people of color are seen as inferior compared to those with more standard European, “white” features. A place where this ideology takes a rather ironic twist is in the Dominican Republic. Although a grand majority of the Dominican people can be considered mulatto or of a mixed European and Black genealogy, many rejected their African descendants. Being “negro” is frowned upon in the Dominican Republic because it is a characteristic associated with the country’s neighbor on Hispañola, Haiti. The feud between Haiti and the Dominican Republic can be traced back to the 19th century and can be seen in modern times in the Dominican Republic’s attempt…
It’s has been a very discussed topic whether the colour of ones skin still can be a burden in today’s society or not. For instance are the black people, and especially in South America racism is a big issue. Thus racism is weakened compared to centuries ago, it is still present in not only a big part of America but in the rest of the world as well. Racism is one of the main issues, that the American author Kiese Laymon is dealing with in his writings. Laymon is black himself and in his work “How to slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America” he shows us his personally story, which is filled with trials and reflections that lightens under-appreciated aspects of the modern American life. In the following essay I will…
Imagine being in WWII United States with 350,000 women in Armed Forces at home and in uniform. Between 1940 and 1945 the female workforce percentage increased from 27% to about 37%. By 1945 nearly 1 out of every 4 married women worked away from home. Women were an important part in WWII because they didn't give up. Women worked for the airforce, Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps, and Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service, just to name some of many important jobs.…

Even though I had enjoyed all the Hispanic traditions of my family, the current situation of my country has led me to immigrate to U.S. I am sure that all of the lessons and traditions that I explained above will always be an important part of who I am. Nevertheless, the political and economic situation of my country has led, not only me, but also millions of Venezuelans to emigrate looking for a better future. In my opinion, this is a sad situation and I hope that with a lot of effort and hope, Venezuela will once again the country my grandparents and parents once lived in.…

Unfortunately, this poem was written in the wake of a gruesome civil war in El Salvador. Some even describe it as “one of the bloodiest political contests in Latin America’s recent history...that cost near 80,000 lives” (Sprenkels…
