Pumpkin Research Paper
The connect event that I attended was not hosted by ACH but by Global Studies (GLS). This event was called Pumpkin Decorating and fittingly was on Monday, October 31 which was Halloween. I wanted to go to this event because it sounded really fun and if I have to do this required assignment I might as well go to something fun and then it will be easier to write about. This event as the event name suggests involves decorating pumpkins. I never decorated or carved a pumpkin before because my family does not do that. When I saw this event I thought, ‘This is my chance to something I always wanted to do but never had the opportunity to do so. The event was everything I expected to be and more: it was fun, exciting and met a lot of new people. This

The cultural event that I attended was the lecture with the Picking Cotton authors Jennifer Thompson and Ronald Cotton. The event was located in Memorial Coliseum where Jennifer Thompson and Ronald Cotton talked about there story. I chose to attend this activity not only for my cultural event, but also because I thought it would be interesting and helpful. I actually enjoyed reading the book and I wanted to hear more about their story and experiences. I was really interested in seeing what they looked like and being able to put a face to the characters of the book. I’m really glad I went to this event because it was great to hear what they had to say and the advice they gave everyone. I think it had a large impact on not only…

There are a number of designs that can be used the most common one being the traditional jack-o'-lantern, which happens to be the easiest design. Volunteers were told the overview of the event prior to signing up, and a timeline was given to each as well. I am unaware of the budget for the event, but knowing it was a fundraiser I am sure this was a top priority to the event planners. The Civic Center seemed to be the perfect location for the event. There was plenty of room inside for all of the entertainment and attractions, as well as plenty of parking outside to accommodate everyone. There were quite enough staffing and volunteers for the event, and I think having everyone work in shifts was a wonderful idea. We did not receive an agenda, but as far as I could tell everything seemed I am not sure all of the vendors involved in the event either. As for the food and beverage, this was the main focus of the event. People specifically bought tickets to eat pancakes. I am unaware as to how much was spent on food, but volunteers prepared and served the food so a catering team was not needed. There were no transportation needs for the event. There was a registration open to sell tickets and to check-in volunteers at the event. Due to the fact that there were so many volunteers, we did not have nametags. I do not believe that there were any outside sponsors of the event. There was a band playing on stage for entertainment, as well as a clown, a lion mascot walking around, face painting, raffle tickets, and other activities for people to enjoy. I personally did not see any…

The entire idea of Thanksgiving is essentially molded around the idea of crops. Thanksgiving is thought to be, historically, a time where the Pilgrims and Indians came together to give thanks for the great harvest. In reality, The Native Americans celebrated the gifts of harvest as often as possible and the Pilgrims and Natives didn’t come together celebrating crops, but instead crops such as corn, and land in general was stolen from the Native Americans.…

Pumpkins are associated with the holiday Halloween as a decoration item to display whatever humorous or horrific pictures you can depict! The original “Jack O’ Lantern” actually originated in Ireland where on hallows eve, they would carve turnips to ward off evil spirits. The reason they carved turnips instead of actual pumpkins was because at that time, pumpkins did not exist in Ireland. The story of the “Jack O’ Lantern” actually originated from an old wise tale.…

A cultural event that I have attended in the past that has had a memorable affect on my life was a Native American Powwow. This event takes place every year, Thanksgiving weekend in Tucson, AZ. I arrived in the late afternoon, as the sun was going down. I remember seeing many different types of people, from tourists to the different Native American performers. The physical setting of this particular celebration was outside, and based around, one main circle. Drums were beating so loud, you could feel the pound inside your chest. Different activities were going on all around, such as dancers, vendors, and a huge variety of foods to choose from. The circular dancing arena is known as the arbor, this area is blessed before any of the events begin (Schultz, 2001). This area is considered to be sacred ground, and is respected throughout the entire celebration (Schultz, 2001). The arbor was made of tree limbs and leaves. The four main entries into the festivities were used to resemble the four points of a compass (Schultz, 2001). The dancers entered from the east entrance, and the main announcer was located by the West entrance. Many spectators were sitting on blankets, and some on lawn chairs. The environment was relaxed, and a very friendly atmosphere. The activities included dance and drum contests, different ceremonies, and many different vendors. The crafts were all handmade and amazing. Each piece looked as if it were specially made from the heart. The Native American culture to me felt festive, warm, and very inviting. The dancer’s come from many different tribes. Their faces were painted, and their costumes consisted of beautiful festive colors. They were made of feathers, sequence, dye, and other natural fabrics.…

The event I have chosen to discuses is the phone calls which I was instructed to make to potential serve-a-thon volunteers. When being instructed on how to make these calls I was lead by a woman named Megan. Megan led me to a desk which was separated from the other callers. I was placed in a small room with one desk, a phone, and a computer. I was then given a sheet of paper with a script in it telling me what to say to a person who would answer then call and what to leave as a message. Megan told me it was self explanatory. She then gave me a binder filled with names and numbers and told me if I have had any question to come over and ask her. I agreed and made my first call with her standing in the cubical with me. The first call was very simple and straight by…

However, this time I wanted to host an event that was more meaningful than watching contestants imbibe gross substances. I wanted to add a deeper meaning and cause the contestants and audience to reflect on the fears that held them back. However, my student government class that it would be unscrupulous to change the event because it was a tradition. I knew that I wanted to do something different but was scared to act because of the dubiety of my peers. However, I knew the event needed to be meaningful and this was an opportunity to affect the culture of my high school. Thus as the chair for the event, I redesigned the landscape. Contestants that signed up were asked to fill out a survey of questions that highlighted specific fears. Then on the stage we asked them to depict a fear in a picture and their partner had to guess what it represented. The event was entertaining as many contestants had witty remarks; however, on a profounder level it caused the contestants to really think about the things they had allowed to inhibit their individual growth. This event has been added to the new tradition at my high school.…
