The Scarlet Letter, a book written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is a book based in a Puritan society. If you look at how people live today and their actions in their everyday life and compare it to how Puritans or the Amish live, I believe that some people would be in shock that there are people who live like they do. And these people who live unlike us don’t think that their way of living is strange or weird. In a Puritan society the Bible provided the way of living and the people living in the community wanted to be a city on the hill. Living in a world where there was very limited technologies, different dressing style, and different ways of education is greatly different compared to the modern world.

The Amish and Puritan’s way of life is a noticeable different in how they live and go through their daily lives. In the modern world, technology is used every single day; school work, communicating with people, traveling and many other things. Without technology today I believe that some people would be lost. When they need to get a task done they do it by hand. If the field needs to be taken care of they used an animal and they guide it. To earn money they tend to make things such as, baskets, barns, and they sometimes sell their crops to other people. If we lived like they today, no one would be in school past eighth grade, no one would apply to be in the military, and people would not be getting divorced. I am grateful to live in the modern society that I do. If I did not live like I do life would be completely different. Some of the daily tasks that I do everyday, would never be

This idea is expressed greatly in The Scarlet Letter. In The Scarlet Letter hypocrisy is evident everywhere. The characters of Hester, Dimmesdale, Chillingworth, and the very society that the characters lived in, were steeped in hypocrisy. Hawthorne was not subtle in his portrayal of the terrible sin of hypocrisy; he made sure it was easy to see the sin at work, just as it is easy to see many of the sins at work in society. There are many parallels that can be drawn between the characters of The Scarlet Letter and those of today 's society. Just because this book is set in colonial times, does not mean its lessons are not applicable to the world we live in.…
