In the 1600’s, the Puritans migrated to the Americas using their more Christian and traditional values to influence the economical, political, and social development of the New England colonies. The Puritans traveled out of a desire to create a more “pure” and more Christian society, not of primarily economic interests. The Puritan’s idea of what God’s indication of a perfect humanity made a lasting impression on New England.
The region’s economic success was second to religious beliefs. New England originally existed as a plantation of Religion, not a plantation of Trade. (Doc J). The Puritans believed that wealth was a sign of God’s favor, and they worked hard to make sure that they were at the “top of the hill”. They became merchants and participated in the commercial trading centers of the New World. The Puritan’s importance of being God’s favorite demonstrates the development of New England’s economy.
Politically, the Puritans influenced the progress of New England by enforcing their strict moral code, morality succeeded all other concerns. The use of morality and religion in politics led to uprisings. An example of this is Roger Williams “Plea for Religious Liberty,” questioning authority. (Doc F). Nathanial Ward argues that liberty, conscience and moral laws have to be in balance in order for the “fiddle to be in tune,” and society to succeed. (Doc G).
The Puritan’s beliefs in community and education caused New England to have bigger families and a better education. Puritan’s believed in educating new members of the “elite,” to inform new followers of their belief. Harvard University was created to teach Puritan ways. They longed for an advance in learning. (Doc E). The Puritans were a very close community. They rejoiced and mourned together. (Doc A). This steered to the development of towns and villages. In addition, the Puritans traveled to the new world in families, not individuals. This causes the region to have a balanced men and women ratio.
All in all, the Puritan’s motivation for establishing a pure Christian society influenced the economic, political, and social development of New England. Economically, they made a center of mercantilism in the favor of God. Politically, the Puritans used their moral beliefs to create a basic political structure for New England. Socially, they formed communities with a balanced male and female population.

Two hundred years earlier the Puritan movement, led to the installment of Oliver Cromwell. Cromwell had temporarily overthrown the British monarchy. He imposed a strict moral code on the people. Cromwell's objective was of spiritual and moral reform. He wanted to restore liberty of conscience and promote both outward and inward godliness throughout England. Cromwell even installed a set of "triers" assess the suitability of future parish ministers, and also a set of "ejectors" to dismiss ministers and schoolmasters who were deemed unsuitable for office. After Cromwell’s death the monarchy had been restored and the two social forces of Puritanism and libertinism continued to motivate the collective psyche of Great Britain. Religious morality…

Both the Pilgrims and the Puritans trust in God’s providence, meaning that what God wants to happen will indeed happen, but, as the two groups made opposing decisions, they executed their new lifestyles much differently. The Puritan’s journey to “purify” the Church of England entailed the immigration of the group from England to America but never separating in faith from the church. Their goal is easily comparable to that of the Scrooby Separatists, as they both sought a land of religious opportunity and freedom, however, the Puritans also strived to set a strong religious example for those who remained in England and were still committed to the church. Puritans never enabled the thoughts of others to persuade them, and living in present day America, these die-hard believers would not allow themselves to fall short of their well-known principles. Their lives would not differ much in the sense of religious practice, as the Puritans depend on the gifts from God in everyday life.…

As the 1630’s came into the world, documented charters materialized into homes, farms, and churches that created the colonies of the New World. The thriving settlers made it their goal to speed up the process of the reformation of their church, as worship was a ritual part of their everyday life. The clergymen lead the colony both in church and in everyday life, as they were the most respected profession at that time. As the colonies grew larger in size, the settlers farmed the essential crops that the land could provide and traded both locally and through a transatlantic route to the motherland, Great Britain. The Puritan religious views helped influence the economic and political systems in New England, as well as the social development.…

John Winthrop was not only a political leader and organizer for the Massachusetts Bay colony, but he was also the leader of forming the idealistic views of the Puritans. Winthrop began his life rich, coming from his families wealth, enjoying his lavish life and the pleasures that came with it. However, while he was under the weather, he realized that indulging in these meager worldly pleasures was not worthwhile in the eyes of the Lord. Furthermore he went on to describe the current state of England as reminiscent of the Biblical story of Sodom and Gomorrah, two cities burned to the ground by God’s wrath for its immeasurable amount of iniquities. With this reality check fresh in his mind, Winthrop decided to side with the religion of the Puritans, whose main goal was to achieve the purification of all corruption within the church and its laws. As a Puritan, Winthrop tried multiple times to solve the “puritan dilemma,” or in other words, shape the new church and lay the foundation it stood upon. By doing so, he led by example, living a life constantly influencing either solely or primarily by God and His word.…

But if to observe this issue from the Native American perspective, we would definitely notice that the practices of Puritans were extremely intimidating and they significantly damaged the authentic American culture. Therefore, such change would only mean the total revision of moral and family values among Indians who could sacrifice their traditions, culture, religion and language, beginning to live in European style. Some scientists even speculate that Puritans were intended to use their practices in order to strengthen their control over the densely inhabited area. Through the establishment of a colony and through the implementation of their Puritanism, they wanted the native population to accept all their obligations and to feel positive about their colonization. The Puritans did not have the moral right to mix religion with politics. The creation of colony implied the use of power and control for social order. Nowhere in the Bible has one seen such things. And this is one more evidence to state that Puritans failed to build their “City upon a Hill” or their ideal society. They failed to realize the Bible itself and the words of Jesus. None of the Puritans denied himself, none of them was peaceful and none was intended to help, caring exclusively about personal…

The Puritans’ influence on New England was mainly political. As a Protestant group of people, they believed in a God, or a Supreme Being, and acknowledged Him as their superior. They also applied this to all other higher authorities by respecting those at a higher rank than their own. As stated in the Salem Covenant of 1636, “We do hereby promise to carry ourselves in all lawful obedience to those that are over us...” (Doc C) they promised to obey those with a higher authority. But, they made sure that one man did not have too much power or authority, because power can eventually lead to corruption. “... give mortal men no greater power than they are content they shall use -- for use it they will....give as much power as God in His word gives to men....” (Doc H) They followed God's’ word in allotting power to prevent corruption due to too much power. The Puritans also established an important principle still used today. That is, the principle of Religious Freedom, or of a Liberty of Conscience. One of their main reasons for coming to settle here was so they could have their own religious freedom, without any persecution from others. Roger Williams declared that “God requireth not a…

Puritans who thrived in the New England area had to find other ways of income to stabilize the economy. The geographical conditions of the area shaped the Puritans character. Prior to the arrival of the Puritans, were the Indians who had used the resources of the area “wastefully.” Puritans argued that they were neglecting what God’s earth had abundantly supplied them with and were not using it properly. In result, Puritans cleared out woodlands and built roads, fences, and settlements. The rocky unfertile soil of the New England area left the Puritans with a few other options to preserve their financial state, such as fishing and shipbuilding which boomed their economy. In the work to keep their economy running the Puritans had to bond and effectively work together. According to “Document A,” working together was the only way anything could be accomplished and doing that would become a model for all to follow with the help of God. The work ethic of the Puritans, such as long laborious hours on the farms and negotiations with Indians, displays the dedication and devotion they had to building their own colony and sustaining their place in the New World. Whether man or woman, they all did something to contribute to their growth. Woman cooked, cleaned, and cared for children that would one day carry one the family businesses. Men cleared land for livestock, cut firewood, built appliances, and butchered livestock. By working together, more had been…

They Puritans goal in instituting their religion was to purify Christianity. It is unlikely that they realized just how influential they would be on New England culture in the years to come. Though many Americans might not enjoy this fact, the social and religious ideas that the Puritans held were essential in the shaping of New England colonies. The ways in which the Puritans socially, economically, and politically applied their religion into daily life greatly changed all the people of New England, for better or for worse. This is proven in how people reacted to their strict rules, the Puritan relations with the Native Americans, and in general their church centered society.…

As Jonathan Edwards writes in his speech, “[T]hey have deserved the fire pit. . . all that preserves them every moment is the mere arbitrary will , and covenanted unobliged forbearance of and incensed God.” The Puritans obviously feared an almighty God and were lived pious lives in his mercy. Puritans also believed that we must suffer in order to gain redemption for our original sin. This suffering came largely in the form of hard work. So despite the fact that each man is predestined either to be saved or to suffer an eternity in the fiery flames of hell, the Puritans still worked hard in hopes of receiving small spiritual rewards. Another reason Puritans were so hard working is they believed that success in their line of business could mean that they one to be saved by God.
