I think the angel was there to heal the child and the people. The child was sick with a temperature. The story says, “…the newborn child had a temperature all night…”. The people were sick in the sense that they were treating things that were different from them as animals. The story says, “…he dragged him out of the mud and locked him up with the hens in the wire chicken coop.” These quotes show that the child was ill and Pelayo was treating the angel like an animal. The angel came when he did, because the child was sick and the world needed healing. The angel came in either October or November, because the people needed to be healed before Christmas. The wise neighbor in the story says, “’He must have been coming for the child, but the poor fellow is so old that the rain knocked him down.’”. I think the angel came down every November to get ready for the birth of Jesus. This year, I think that the angel knew it would take them a while to figure out why he was there, so he came earlier than he normally would to get prepared for Christmas and teach the people. The angel just seemed like a burden to Elisenda and Pelayo, they didn’t think about what it meant. They put the angel in the chicken coop instead of treating him like a guest. They didn’t know what to do with the angel, so they decided not to think about it, until later when Elisenda had the idea to make money of the angel. I think that’s what people do in life, if we don’t know what something is, we ignore it or give it a stereotype. The people in the story also wanted to use the angel, “…he should be promoted to the rank of five-star general in order to win all wars.” This quote shows that the people wanted to use the angel to solve their
