Pursuing Educational Goals
Accomplishing my educational goal of attending and graduating from Howard University will help me assist other young women by providing a realistic representation in the Journalism field as someone who comes from where they come from. As a graduate of Lincoln College Preparatory Academy, within the Kansas City Missouri School District, there were very few opportunities presented to us; although, we were ranked as the #1 high school in Missouri. Despite what many may believe, there is great talent within the Kansas City Missouri School District; sometimes the lack of resources is the greatest hindrance. There are a number of reasons why I am pursuing my degree in English Language and Literature at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU). One of them is to become a better journalist and broadcaster. Achieving this goal would not only mean that I will become a better media professional, it also means that I would be the first of my mother’s children to finish college and most importantly, I would be able to have a positive impact on my community and country.…

Not to mention having Phylicia Rashad as a Notable alumni made it even better. Having so many great people going to that school really pushed me into wanting to go even more. Even though this my be the college of my dreams, this means leaving my family. Washington D.C is not that far from here, but for me it is hours and days away. On the bright side news reporters have said that Howard has an exceptional film program. The truth is I’m really not sure what I want to do, being a film director, an actor, or maybe even lawyer it all seems like a lot. Especially for a person of color, the world is set up so that a person like me won’t succeed. Of course I want to go to college, but am I ready for it? Why should I have to write a paper on the college I want to go to. I know this is assignment is given to everybody, but I feel like there is more than what they say. Would you ask me to write a paper if I was different. This is my paper, this is why I want to go to Howard University. “There's always something to suggest that you'll never be who you wanted to be. Your choice is to take it or keep on moving.” -…

When I first heard of this opportunity, I became very ecstatic. As an avid New York Times reader, the opportunity to work with the paper itself was exciting. I love to write and find myself always writing on my blog or my journal, expressing my story and my voice. I want to express my unique voice as Laissa Alexis, the uniqueness of the experiences I have been through. My life as a Haitian immigrant, living in New Jersey and going to an all-girls Catholic school in an urban area. I would be able to express a narrative that is not often heard. I view the world in different lenses and I would love to share with the…

I was always told "don't plan too far ahead, because something will always come in your way," and I never listened. If I were to be granted admission I would make sure I got the full college experience by working hard to be at the top of my class, joining a club that revolves around my hobbies, and of course, making myself proud.…

There are several fundamental reasons why students all over the world choose to pursue higher education: to broaden their knowledge base, to achieve financial independence, and to be a part of an environment that fosters personal growth. I truly believe that the best way to accomplish these three goals is to fully immerse oneself in a stimulating environment, where there is an abundance of opportunities to grow both during and after college. I am currently a second-year student at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), and I spent my first year of post-secondary education at the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC). I am highly interested in pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, but my current institution only offers…

In 2014 I began teaching at Patrick Henry Elementary School in Martinsville, Virginia. It was my second year of teaching and I was eager, “prepared,” and confident. I learned quickly that this was unlike any school in which I had ever taught. Patrick Henry is a predominantly economically disadvantaged school which means, I was not as prepared as I thought. My first year at Patrick Henry was challenging and there were many bumps in the road but, I learned how to navigate them quickly. Teaching at Patrick Henry has been one of the most rewarding things I have done it my life. By obtaining my Maters in Curriculum and Instruction I hope to give back to a school community that I have learned so much from.…

Teachers have a very important responsibility of shaping the lives of young, impressionable children. With this responsibility comes great pride and joy. Therefore, as a high school teacher I want to strive to be what can be considered as, a "good teacher." A good teacher can be defined as someone who always pushes students to want to do their best while at the same time trying to make learning interesting as well as creative. A positive or negative influence from a teacher early on in life can have a great effect on the life of a child. As part of my goal statement I plan to incorporate all of these qualities to become the teacher that I expect and want to be.…

Neither of my parents graduated from college, I am the first in my family to earn an associate’s degree. I chose to pursue my college education despite pressures from my working-class family to just work instead. They wanted me to avoid what they view as a costly and unnecessary expense and to stay out of debt in order to avoid the money-problems they faced. At HCC, need-based grants covered my tuition, but I hope that with scholarships like the ones UT offers, I can afford to finish my degree and inspire my six brothers and sisters to pursue thier college education.…
