Pursuing My Biomedical Science Degree
I have always had a curiosity about the complexity of life and how it all works. Ever since I was a young child I have laid awake in bed thinking about how bizarre it is to be alive. This is why I think that biomedical science is the right course for me. I believe it will allow me to further explore topics I find interesting and open doors for me to be able to use my knowledge to improve the lives of others through research and testing. I feel that the skills I have obtained throughout my education will aid me in this course. For example, during my GCSE sciences and A-level biology and chemistry courses, I have carried out multiple practical experiments and developed many laboratory skills. These skills allow me to perform experiments confidently …show more content…

I chose these topics because I have an interest in how biology can be used to help people outside the realm of mainstream medicine. In addition, these issues are not regularly exposed to the media in a positive light so I feel that not many people know about the potential benefits of these new technologies.

For work experience, I completed a week in my local pharmacy in which I worked alongside the pharmacists and pharmacy assistants. In this week, I developed my computer and organisation skills and I feel this gives me relevant experience to excel in my course. This experience helped me gain a greater understanding of the inner workings of a pharmacy.

In my personal life, I have taken part in various activities to develop my skills beyond the classroom. An example of this is taking part in the National Citizen Service during the summer after I completed my GCSE exams. During this time, I faced many challenges and pushed myself to complete tasks I never would have done otherwise. As a group, we worked together to support a mental health charity and raise funds and awareness for people suffering with mental health issues. One thing we did was hold a bake sale in Derby train station to raise money for their charity, we also did bucket collections in the town centre and made posters to raise awareness for the

I can still vividly recall the eleven-year-old me fawning over the likes of Lawrence Krauss and Neil Degrasse Tyson. I was completely immersed in everything and anything pertaining to the vast universe beyond our seemingly insignificant world. I thought I had it all figured out. I would devote my life to being an astrophysicist and eventually earn my PhD. I would relish in the pink lettering on my wall that said “Dr. Mia”, but as I approach my late teens, my mind has been bombarded with what-ifs and buts. Irrespective of my change of heart, I still have an intense passion for math and science since it is how we explain the world around us, and that is why I have settled on biomedical engineering.…

I learned how to measure vital signs, how to identify what kind of food poisoning someone has, what the percentage is for a child of someone with Huntington’s disease, and so much more. The abilities an individual possesses are an accumulation of their previous life experiences and the various competences which have been practiced for many years. Often times, these skills are overlooked and taken for granted as we never actually think about them in terms of their effect on our potential career choices. After thinking about my personal skills, I compiled a list which included; communication, cooperation, patience, listening, helping others and perseverance; all skills which I have possessed for majority of my lifetime and have used to overcome many challenges. One example in particular which required me to draw on many of these skills, was fairly recently; I am a dance instructor for children ages four to seven and there was a young boy who joined the class later than the rest of the students. I noticed that he was struggling…

My interest for law began when studying the topic of Crime and Deviance in GCSE Sociology. The subject allowed me to look at how society functions, the behaviour of different social groups and how the social policies put in place by the bodies of government help regulate the social order. Crime and Deviance taught me how laws are made and enforced and the various crimes which occur within the corporate world for example white collar crimes. This led to my interest being focused on criminal and corporate law. However through taster courses I learnt that there are many areas of law which spark my interest as I gained an insight into the core modules of the law degree.…

I have been interested in the inner workings of the human mind for years. In the summer prior to my junior year, I took a pre-college neuroscience course at Emory University, which only strengthened my interest in neuroscience. I hope to research in neuroscience following college. I believe that majoring in chemistry will aid me in finding a career in research, while majoring in neuroscience will aid me in the field for obvious reasons. At USC, I hope to pursue my academic interests by pursuing these majors and focusing on my academic success with my future in mind. I plan to take a rigorous, but not overwhelming, course load and devote a reasonable amount of time to studying. I also intend to enjoy the arts and activities on campus to become…

From a young age we’re asked what we want to be when we grow up, never how we expect to become when we grow up. I was well aware of what I wanted to become, but not sure how to get there until I started high school when my counselor explained to me the importance of having a full portfolio with a wide range of extracurricular activities. Then it became clear to me, I needed extracurricular activities to become who I wished to be. Throughout my high school career I’ve participated in several extracurricular actives such as math club, soccer and UIL One Act. In the future, I want to participate in these activities or anything similar to those I participated in high school.…

I chose to pursue a STEM degree for multiple reasons. First, my lifelong goal is to attain a career where I can help others. All humans were placed on this Earth the same way, and no one deserves to suffer from life-threatening diseases and illnesses. I believe that I can help others by researching diseases, illnesses, and finding cures. Therefore, I'm double majoring in microbiology and medical laboratory science, and plan on becoming a clinical pathologist. Science always intrigues me, and the human body continues to amaze me every day. Strangely, we live in these bodies our whole lives, but still don't know how to cure certain diseases affecting the body. Granted, many advances continue to be made in the medical field, however, I would like…
